I have been cultivating Milkweeds for 3 years. The blooms differ in color by the variety of Milkweed. These are from the Swampweed variety. I have had dozens of Monarchs graduate from my academy to go out and add a little beauty to gardens everywhere.

I have posted pics of Monarchs in several stages here: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-603778-1.html

Here are a couple of Monarch cats munching away:https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-601182-1.html

Both were shot with the D500 80mm F5.6 1/180 ISO 100

Nice! I have heard they are farming the ones with pods increasingly for cattle feed....

We just put in milkweed this year. I hope they are as beautiful as yours.

Hey Mike. It might take a year or two before you get plants that will produce enough leaves to sustain the cats until they mature but watching them go through the stages ubtil they fly away will make it worth the effort.

It's great that people are cultivating milkweed. It in part offsets the loss of milkweed near fields of GMO corn sprayed with Roundup.

Thank you for your comment Richard. My plants will be going to seed in a while, and I always collect the pods. If you are interested in starting some plants, PM me.

Correction on the shutter speed. It should be 1/80. Little typo.

Jan, I am so impressed by the gorgeous and varied color of the swamp milkweed. Thank you for the photos. We have some native milkweed here in Northern Minnesota, and a diminishing number of Monarchs, but I have never seen this variety of milkweed. We are planting our native variety in our butterfly garden in hopes... John

Thanks for the comment Bruce. I tried several varieties, but this one does the best for me, and even though the Queen did deposit some eggs on the other varieties, the majority were on the Swamp variety. Good luck with your crop.
