If time travel is ever possible, this is the most important thing someone can do. Go back into the past and tell all these ancient people to keep better records.

My son is watching a show on the computer about people trying to guess what ancient artifacts are and who made them. Lots of guesswork.

Despite the impossibility of time travel, the subject has spawned numerous exciting, plausible, interesting, and sometimes ridiculous stories based on time travel.

Yup. Educated speculation.

I like time travel stories if they are done right. I agree that we will never go back in time, nor will anyone travel to the future. There is no past or future.

There is past, it is our history. That just cannot be verified except by reporting and often that is not always completely accurate.

There also is future. However, that is much more difficult to ascertain because it has not yet happened and much of it will depend on decisions made by each and everyone of us

...

And what we know of history depends on who/what is recorded (reported).
Just like what we hear today. Rightly or wrongly reported, someone recorded things,
their interpretation. Hopefully mostly accurate.

The notion of parallel universes and stories associated with them is fascinating. The latest one I saw is "The Man in the High Castle", a Netflix series. It just completed it's 4th and final season. Worth a look if you are into this genre.

Remember , someone, I forget who said " History is written by the winners", I guess that's the thought for the day.

I agree that there is no past or future. The past resides in our memory. The future resides in our imagination. I am reminded of Steven King's great movie, The Langoliers, where horrifying creatures gobbled up time that had been used and left a black nothingness behind them.

This quote seems to be attributed to a guy named Winston Churchill.

We also see the past every day. When you see the sun set, that actually happened 8 minutes before. And how about those stars. Many of the stars we see are long gone.
Just sayin’.

Basically we can effectively see what happened in the past relative to our present but we can’t see it relative to it's physical occurrence in time.
