You're very welcome.

Years ago, I shared an office with a guy who translated/wrote all of the assembly line processes and procedures in Spanish. He was, obviously, fluent in both English and Spanish. He enlightened me to the Academia and that they met periodically, I think every 4 years, to discuss the development of the Spanish Language. Representatives from every Spanish speaking country would attend these meetings and travel back to their homeland with the developments. They would then share them with their homeland.

He also commented on the various and numerous dialects spoken throughout the world. In some cases, one could say something that would get you shot and the same thing in another local would get a shrug and a what?, completely unable to understand what you meant.

In the 90's, I had the opportunity to work on a operations consolidation project involving our Mexican division. I spent time in both Hermosillo and Mexico City, and there were differences in the accents. The "purest" Spanish seemed to be in Mexico City, and I believe that was due to the cosmopolitan, urban make up. I took a basic Spanish class before beginning the assignment, but I was never pressed to speak much Spanish. My Mexican counterparts spoke English so fluently, that there was little need for me to use it.

It also reminded me of my French studies in high school and college. My high school teacher taught conversational French, much different than the French spoken on lab recordings. He stressed the differences in the language, say between Marseilles and Lille.

And we have trouble with language accents from New England and Alabama?

Just waiting for the Admins to reply. I'd like to see who they are and what they look like. Probably some social leftist folks that don't have courage to show themselves, but can only hide behind the censorship label.

I've been watching a Spanish TV series - Alta Mar (High Seas). It's in Spanish with closed captions. I noticed that some of the "S" sounds have the tongue going between the teeth, as in the word "thin." What's the story with that? I haven't noticed it in Mexican Spanish, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Mexican Spanish is considered the Spanish version of US English. It adapts and changes words sounds etc from anywhere if it seems to be useful. And just like our regional accents, Mexican Spanish has those also. One class I was in we had a visiting professor from Mexico City who told us that in some predominantly Indian areas it was almost like another language. And along the US border and among immigrants in the US they often spoke what he called "Spanglish". In fact during my years teaching in East Los Angeles even the students referred to it as Spanglish and said they often had to be careful to speak "real" Spanish to older relatives. A friend (best man at our wedding) told me you haven't been chewed out until a little old Mexican Grandma gets after you for speaking Spanglish.
The "purist" Spanish (text book Castilian) in the Americas used to be middle and upper class Puerto Ricans since their schools taught text book Castilian. A Puerto Rican teacher I worked with could really get going in his opinion of the various types of Spanish from different places in the Americas. Besides the barrio kids around LA (and he was generous in saying they just didn't know better) his biggest peeve was Cuban Spanish. He compared them to places like the Bronx or Cockneys in the English speaking world. The man was fluent in several languages and taught ESL & Spanish Literature in an LA School with many languages among the students.

I became a bit of a friend with one of my geography professors who was fluent in Spanish but learned it in Mexico. He got invited to the wedding of one of his best friends from UCLA in Argentina (rich family they gave the invitees round trip tickets). At the reception he said something to his friend's sister that was a compliment in Mexican Spanish. She gasped and an Uncle who overheard it (Argentine military in uniform with sidearm) started yelling and came at him reaching for his sidearm. His friend was nearby and intervened. He then explained to everyone that Mexican Spanish was "different". And then to the professor he added since most of my family could use the practice why don't you just speak English to everyone?

I have chimed in on some threads. Sure enough the Admin dragged me up 39 stairs By my ankles to the Attic banging the back of my head on each step.

I have sent a Private Message to the Admin to clarify their decision to censor something I wrote. I never received a response to my text. I chalk it off as the Admin being shy or perhaps they don’t wish to begin a word war here.

We should be thankful that The Ugly Hedge Hog exists and we are allowed freedom of speech. We shouldn’t talk about religion and politics. That only opens up the website to one word war after another.
I really came here not to discuss silliness but to improve my skills as a occasional hobbyist.

Oh, I agree with you about the silliness. But they should have the balls to come forward and explain the details rather than hide behind their badges of obscurity. I had a thread canceled with some travel information from NM Gal that I wanted to keep. I made a comment about the dangers of taking prescription drugs from India And China and how unsafe they are

You have successfully steered a relatively informative post into something completely opposite. You sir, have won the internet today.

So the owners of this forum are cowardly, censoring, "leftist folks"? Do you not understand what this forum is about? Is it so hard to follow the rules in a forum where you are a guest?

Is it so hard to explain why some innocuous posts are deleted while others that are even more political don't get censored? All I ask for is an explanation.

It's Admin's forum, therefore his/her call. Just stay away from anything political unless you're in the Attic. Maybe you're injecting politics without even realizing it?
