Me, too, Fran. I need that lens to try some of what you do!

Well clearly I don’t exactly know how myself, Ron! But rest assured this won’t happen again! At least not in this manner. Lesson learned inexpensively!

Thanks for sharing Marg. It can happen to any of us no matter how careful we can be. May relook filter use again.

Very interesting. Usually you use heat to loosen something tightly screwed on. But then again, using a propane torch probably wouldn't do the lens much good.

But it could make for an interesting creative photo op!

Glad everything ended fine, but you should have taken it to a camera repair shop or at least a mom and pop type camera store for removal. A friend of mine dropped her camera back pack and shattered the filter over her pricey Nikon FX zoom lens. I kept telling her to leave it a lone. We ended our photo trip and headed to Padadena, CA to Sammy's Camera. They easily removed the remains of the filter but her picking at the broken glass bits had slightly scratched the actual front element. Probably not enough to show in a photo but she was freaking out about it. I warned her, leave it!

Lamiaceae, we have no camera shop anywhere close. If this hadn’t worked I’d have had to ship it somewhere. I hope there are no minute pieces left to scratch the lens. Does your wife listen better now?

Thank you. I was thinking backward and not properly visualizing the filter threads. Somehow I was thinking the threads were outside the lens. Of course, they are inside the lens. Thus, contracting them, will loosen it.

I’m glad scruples was able to help. No surprise there. He’s a scientist after all! 😉

The same thing happened to my Brand New FX24-70mm. I did see large shards, so before I removed I made sure I tilted the lens down with a slight shake. No issue to the lens surface, luckilly. I however always use a UVF Filter on all my lenses and luckilly it saved my lens as well. That's the first thing I do when I get a new lens, install the high quality filter.. if not for anything else but scratches and dust resist. Otherwise it's a very expensive way to learn a lesson even from normal use.. Glad you saved your lens. Good idea with the ice

Thanks, Lea! That was really good thinking to turn it upside down. I don’t know whether I did that or not. 😳

Those filters do have a duel purpose.

Those lenses are great but they aren't cheap. I know; I have one.

I forgot to zip my camera bag once and as I swung it out of the trunk and up to my shoulder by Canon 5d MK II and a 70-200 f2.8 went flying. Fortunately, the UV filter took the brunt of the damage, but the lens threads were also damaged, $380 repair bill...guess who never leaves his camera bag unzipped ever...

Glad only your UV filter was damaged.

Me, too, Jerry. Sorry for your damage. That was an expensive lesson.

A happy ending to a problem most of us have faced at one time or another. I've heard, from wiser people than me, that UV filters were designed for film and don't apply to digital from an image enhancement perspective. For protecting the lens though, you can use a "clear" lens protective filter. I've switched all of mine over, mostly to the Marumi brand which are made in Japan and seem to be very high quality and less expensive as some of the better known name brands.

Thanks MtManMD! I does appear I am far from the only one to whom this has happened. I’ll have a look at the Marino brand. I’m curious though- somewhere I read that UV filters are good for shooting in the mountains. I guess you don’t feel that need. I’ve just spent some time looking through your photos and they are stunningly beautiful!

That example is why there are a very few items which I will delegate the job of transporting them to a new residence. However, that said, our last move was handled by a relocation service and I don't think anything we entrusted to them were damaged or lost. On the other hand, one item I kept control of did end up damaged.

Well that doesn’t seem right does it? But at least another person was saved from feeling guilty.

Hello the cost of a filter and a lenses hood is nothing compared to a new lens so be sensible and get both for all your lenses

Yes, sir! I will!! (I do have hoods for all and have witnessed the benefit more times than I care to admit.)

Hi Marg
So happy to hear the bad turned good .
from now on "I aced it turns to I iced it"

Great method ...I only use ice for wax removal . It could have been a sad, hard lesson. The kind we torture ourselves over.
