Do we overvalue free speech in the US?

So do you think the first ammendment is overrated? Do we overvalue free speech? What other freedoms do we "over value"? Is this the beginning of the end of freedom in the US? Don't we lose something when we cross the line from criticising stupid speech to invoking government power to suppress and punish stupid speech?

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2012/09/the_vile_anti_muslim_video_and_the_first_amendment_does_the_u_s_overvalue_free_speech_.single.html

Would this opinion piece even exist if there weren't those that are threatening violence that a segment of our society feels the need to appease and surrender to?

I believe in free speech but not the right to slander another person out of hate. However our 1st amendment rights most stand as is if we are to enjoy the freedoms we do have. If we can not speak out against our own goverment then we are no longer a free nation.

actually hate speech needs the protection of our 1st amendment most of all! Have a nice day does not need constitutional protection but ----------- is a @@#$@*&^%$! does need protection. Not defending them at all, but when the KKK or the Nazi's lose their freedom to express themselves, we all lose a little of our liberty.

what we need to do is get rid of all lawyers.most judges start out as lawyers, and now they are ruining our way of life.most laws are written by lawyers, they complicate things and create business for themselves.the money comes out of our pockets.

Our First Ammendment is perhaps one of the most abused documents that we depend on daily.

I agree...a philosophy prof once told me.." any idea taken to its logical conclusion becomes absurd"

If you look at several amendments to the constitution..its seems true...I should be able to buy a bazooka...2nd...why do I need a picture ID...4th... (unlawful search?) and list can go on...

But there is a reason that the first amendment is first...sometimes that doesnt make sense to us...but in the long run it is the foundation of this country.

And they SCREAM Ist amendment... unless it's the other guy.

The house and senate pass H.R. 347, and potus signs it. What a crime!

Step by step, inch by inch, they whittle away at the constitution.

Just wait till the "Reign of Terror" begins.

Rent "A man for all seasons".

Paul Scoffield , Who plays Sir Thomas More, tells Robert Shaw, who plays Henry the 8th, something like this, " If you cut down all the trees in the pursuit of your enemy, There will be no trees for you to hide behind."

I'm probably not 100% accurate but close enough so you get the idea.

Your first mistake was listening to a philosophy prof.
