I made these four photos in HUE Vietnam 1968, Anthony P. Gawrys I was just 20 yrs old in the making. I was involved in Art when I was 3yrs old and drew all kinds of cartoon characters perfectly.

I started my photography career in 1967 during my service days. I was on special detachment to Okinawa from HUE Vietnam 1968. While in Oki. I bought a brand new Minolta SRT 101 35mm film camera with a 58mm f1.4 lens.

In photo 1, I picked up the little boy and sat him on the Honda motorcycle. I focused my camera, composed, took one shot and walked away.

Photo 3, shows a man hauling his load. Notice he's smoking a cigarette, that's not a Marlboro, it's a joint!

Photo 4, shows girls disembarking from the perfume river.

My Food photography hadn't started yet, we have to wait 40 years longer! CIAO, AP

Thanks for the memories. I never say a hog strapped on the back of a bike until I was sent to Korea. Good shots.

How close to the Tet Offensive were these taken in '68?

I was in Viet Nam the folllowing year, 69 and 70 also stationed near Hue in Phu Bai. I worked at the 131st Aviation company which did arial recon photos of enemy troop movement . I was in the photo lab platoon from spring of 69 to spring of 70. Even though I probably took a lot of photos during that year I have very few left to remember, but I do have a few, mostly of my company area. Here are the only ones I have on my computer. #1 My platoon members, I am second from the left on the top row. 22 years old at the time. #2 Looking out from the back of the company area with guard tower in forground. #3 Looking at the back of the company area from the field behind it. #4 A crater from an enemy rocket shot down on the base. I was about a hundred yard from the back of the company area. photo 3 is taken from the same location. This one rocket atttack was the closest to any danger I experienced during my year in Nam. I was very lucky. I only got off base and into Phu Bai itself a couple of times that year, Hue maybe once.

Hey AP thanks for serving. I was a USN Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Fleet Marine Force. I too picked up my first SLR on Okinawa. It was a Minolta SRT-Super, what they were calling the 101 in 1974. I still have it and used it for all of my crime scene photography with only the original 50mm f-1.4 lens. It was a great camera to learn the fundamentals with.

Interesting pictures and story. I served in 1968 & 1969, as an Air traffic controller, I stayed state side, I did receive orders to go to Vietnam, but an emergency request for three air traffic controllers came into personal the same day I was leaving. The order had authority to stop any controllers enroute, I stayed here. I appreciate your service.

Welcome, copladocus! As a Navy Corpsman, I hope your practice was a mild one . . . I was in the US Navy "SEABEES" MCB-8, worked quiet a bit of hours, including Sundays, half days.

When back in the states, I traded all my 35mm Minolta SRT 101, and moved on to Nikon F film camera & lenses. Their's much to talk about in photography, but I'll let it rest for now . . . those were tough years! AP
