I'm looking to upgrade to a faster and sharper long zoom. Mostly, I need something faster for lower light situations.
For cost reasons, I am thinking to get the Tamron which is reported to be a little sharper than the Sigma equivalent. I've read good things about the Beercan which gets me to f4 and is much lower in cost.
I understand that the lenses are soft at f2.8 but sharp at f4. I was wondering if that can still be useful wide open or what my expectations should be. For those with any of these lens, what do you like or not like about it?
I asked myself this same question when looking for an all purpose lens. I choose the Sigma 18-250 and have been very happy with it. It seems since that time the Tamron 18-270 has improved and is good (I have not experience with that lens). When I wanted a longer zoom (500mm) I looked asked the same question and decided on the Tamron 200-500 because it weighs less than other lenses in this categroy. I have been very happy with that lens too.
I hope you enjoy your search as much as you will enjoy the lens you choose.
I have had the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for several years. I use(d) it with both 1.4x and 2x teleconverters on several Nikon Bodies (D800, D700, D300s, F5, F100, N80. It focuses fast. I don't notice a lack of sharpness at f2.8 vs f4. This lens is a good compliment to the Sigma 300 f2.8. I usually put the 300 on a wimberly sidekick and use the 70-200 for handheld flight and wildlife shots. I like it even better handheld now that I can bump the ISO on the newer bodies.
I don't know about Tamron or the other brands you mentioned but I have a couple of Tamron SP lenses and like those as well..
I have the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 great lens for the price. The only thing bad Ive experienced with it is at full 200mm its a little soft. But then again its half the price of canon L lens. I also have the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, great lens sharp.
I just had my Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 out this last weekend shooting birthday photos at an indoor swimming pool. I would say 90% of the shots came out good and the color was impressive. Tamron makes a great product. If you do a search on this website for Tamron you should find where I listed a few websites for reviews of the Tamron 70-200. Good luck on your decision....
Thanks everyone. I missed a great deal on a like new Tamron last week because I hesitated and I've been kicking myself ever since. I have the 17 - 50 2.8 which I really like.
