Pics from the top ... Of New England that is.
Here are the pics I promised from Mt. Washington.
Looking up from Conway, NH.
Starting the drive up on the Auto Road.
Continuing up as the clouds come down.
Getting closer to the top.
Above the clouds.
At the top ... finally.
In the clouds with 21 degree windchill.
100+ mile visibility. Taken from inside at top.
Visibility dropped to 1/8 mile quickly.
Don't you love the temperature change going up?
It's even better coming down.

Thanks for the preview BigBear. We'll be there in a couple of weeks. Planning to take the Cog RR from N. Conway.
We're coming from the Niagara Falls area - will we need a to bring a windbreaker?

I suggest an insulated windbreaker and watch the weather carefully. We were in NH for a week and the only window for visibility more than 1/8 of a mile was Thurs morning. At 6am the visibility was over 100 miles. By 10:30 in started to deteriorate quickly. At the bottom of the mountain it was 92 degrees and calm. At the top there was a 40 mph wind and 20 degrees with the windchill. The clouds were literally whipping by our feet.

I thought it refreshing in both directions.
Thanks for the weather info. I don't think it'll be 92 at the base in mid October but I hear your advice regarding the drastic difference between top and bottom.
Looking forward to some great colors at this time of the year. Visited other areas of NE two years ago and it was fantastic. Had a different camera then (D80), now D7000.

BigBear is not exaggerating - bring your heavy coat, a warm hat, and gloves. - It can often snow in Oct. - my daughter's Outdoor Biology class hiked up in the end of September, and they had plowed the road once already !
Oh, and I don't know if they still do it, but call ahead for tickets - sometimes the first train of the day is half price !
OK to add some photos? Don't want to hijack!
Thank you all for your comments. I didn't take as many as I would like, but as I said the conditions deteriorated fast.
As they say, 'if you don't like the New England weather, wait a few minutes' ....

Great place. Haven't been there for about 20 years. Clog RR is the one that takes you to the top if you dont want to drive. Its intresting to see how the trees get smaller as you go up till you get to the top and then there is no trees at all. Very windy all the time. I got a kick out of looking down on the top of small planes going by. I have a lot of photos that I have to scan some day. If you like traines they have a great ride out of the town of Conway.
Thanks for the weather warning Jake. We're used to the nasty weather but it's good to be prepared. We'll bring some extra gear - to keep the Nikon warm of course.
Love to see some pics but it's BigBear's thread.
I hope he wouldn't mind.
Thanks. Dave
Hal81 - Plan on taking the train - not sure about the wife - she doesn't like heights. Used to work for the NY Central in the late 60's - but I think this is a little different.
