Fall in California

Mostly shot with a Nikon Z7, either a Z 24-70 or a non-Z 24-120 lens, but I also used a Nikon D500 with a 500PF lens for the long shots. All RAW images and processed in LrC and, in some cases, PS. All shot as I "followed the light" through the early morning or late afternoon. I like the more intimate scenes in nature so most of my shots reflect this. I was shooting for composition, depth of field, layering and color...I like to have a goal, or goals, in mind when I go out on a shoot. These were all shots on roads leading off of Hwy. 395 in Northern California. It was interesting with this shoot as I shot both JPEG and RAW (I normally only shoot RAW) for some images just to see how they compared from the standpoint of the camera doing the editing and me doing the editing...I much preferred the image where I took control of the editing process.

P.S. Put some black in what was the first one and added it again as the second to last one.

They look great. Having a goal, or set of preferences, to begin with seems to help you! The first three look a bit washed-out, were they the in-camera processed jpegs?

No, not JPEGS. It was interesting to see that as I posted the images a couple became washed-out to some degree. I did consider not posting them, but I think, perhaps, the site could not handle the color gamut and "dumbed them down" to some degree. Just a guess, I'm not really into website technology. In reality, they are quite bright but there is no way to convey that! I think the posting technology on this site could use some upgrading. Also, at times, I am quilty of liking images not too filled with black or shadows, just a personal preference.

Very nice! I'm guessing number 3 was taken at Silver Lake? I took some similar photos there two years ago.

We're going to try to get to Yosemite Valley this Friday or Saturday; did you make it there, and if so, how is it now?

Yes, Silver Lake it was. There was not a lot of smoke last week but this week, where I live in Sonora, the air quality simply sucks the big one. Check the air quality alerts for the area as it does change from day to day. I did not go to Yosemite as I had done that a few weeks back for some night shooting with Michael Frye. Having to have a pass to go to Yosemite makes it difficult to pick the best days! Good luck.

These look great to me! Pity you did not share a larger version so that we could see more detail, but it looks as though you got some excellent images. I like the way you rendered these fall colours and the patterns in the trees. Please stay well and keep on sharing.

The UHH site works best with sRGB colour palette, as do most websites. To get the best results, save anything you want to post in the sRGB colour gamut. If you don't, the site will do a conversion to sRGB arbitrarily, without respect of your original colour gamut.
