NEF file vs NEF+JPEG

I always shoot raw with my Nikon D5500. Sometimes after some processing in Lightroom most of the raw files will maintain the "filename-xxx.NEF" file name. However some of the files start showing up as "filename-xxx.NEF+JPEG". This is within a group of photos all taken at the same time without changing settings in the camera. When I look at the metadata, it shows the filename without the +JPEG extension but lists as Sidecar Files "xmp, jpg". Could it be because that particular file has been exported as a "jpg"? Can anyone give me any explanation for this? It does not seem to make any difference as to sort order, processing or anything else, I am just curious. Thanks in advance for any insight given.

I use a D5500 but shoot both raw and jpeg. They show as jpg or raw. What program are you using that displays this information?

If you export a file it will be saved as a JPG (depending on the settings).

Showing up where? Viewing file names with what program? In LR?

Look at the metadata? Viewing metadata with what program? Are you referring to the file manager?

Maybe CHG_Canon will have an answer?

This is wierd for sure. Where are you seeing "filename-xxx.NEF+JPEG"? This is not a legit file name. Nef+jpeg is a menu option in camera.

Lightroom's export has a setting to add the exported (JPEG) file to the catalog. Maybe you have that setting active and every image you export gets added into the catalog, next to the NEF?

I have shot raw with several Nikons over the years, the last 2.5 using a Canon - I shoot raw 100% of the time. I have used Lightroom since 2014. I export as JPG when needed, all files are converted to DNG on import from NEF, CR2 or CR3. I do not store JPG's unless they are originals from my devices.

All my flicker posting of course are JPG's exported thru Lightroom.

I have never run across an issue as decsribed.

That must be the correct answer to my question. For the others that responded, all of this is happening inside Lightroom. It is just in Lightroom I see the file name.NEF-JPEG listed with each photo in library mode. In widows file manager it just shows file name.nef.

Thanks for the responses..

Thanks for clarifying. I honestly have not seen that in LR. Are you exporting the images using the same name? I don't recommend that. Myself, I usually append _LRout to the file name on my exported files. If I export more than one then it's LRout, LRout2... Etc. That way they all have unique names.

FYI if you export an image it is still there on your hard drive, even if it is not added to the catalog.

I create a sub folder under shoot_name, called "Output Files" for all photos exported from LR or PS. Then If I want to re-send a JPEG using email I just look under shoot_name/Output_Files and attach the file.

Just saying...

Yes, I do export my jpegs to the same directory and file name, except of course the extension is .jpg and have Lightroom set to add them to the catalog and stack with the original. I am strictly a hobbyist photographer and just export jpegs on my favorite shots for upload to Flickr for family and friends to see.

I too am a Hobbyist.

Ok so that is why you see Nef+jpeg on the file name.

It's ok to use the same folder for exports, but I highly recommend you change the file name on the exported files. It will make life easier. You can easily do that with Lightroom upon export.
