Few folks under about 35 care about DVDs. I’m 65. I have two DVD/VHS players on our TVs, and several burners to plug into computers. But I probably play 1-2 discs a year, and no tapes.

I burned one DVD video last year, from Final Cut Pro on my iMac.

Yes, some folks do cling to the past. It’s what they know, and they get very uncomfortable around new technology.

When I trained Census enumerators last August, I had a newly-retired attorney in my class. He was a flip phone user, who FREAKED OUT at the iPhones used by the Census. He quit on the spot, sadly but fortunately, for all of us.

People like that probably wish milk came in cream separator bottles delivered to their doorsteps, too.

Apple just released four new iPhones a few hours ago. The pro models can record and edit 4K video in Dolby HDR video, and upload it via 5G to the Cloud. Those phones have Apple “systems on chips“ with 11.8 BILLION transistors in them.

It’s an Internet world...

I turned 40 this year, I'm still for DVDs, actually that's what I use my PS4 mainly for. I wish milk was still delivered to my doorstep in cream separator bottles. I wish people would still interact as they used to and send SMS instead of whatsapp or messenger messages, or even better, use the stupid phones (as opposed to "smart" phones) to make phone calls!! I wish there was more privacy in this IOT world. I wish that people took seriously the scientific studies that have shown the negative effects of health from radiation and not jump on the first 5G phone they can grab a hold of. I wish I could still have a walk to the video store to pick up some DVDs for the weekend instead of sitting around in my couch looking for something to watch for hours and hours but not finding anything interesting. I wish people would sit at the table and talk instead of just scrolling on their phone screens. But most likely the world will never be again that way.

Anyway, it is what it is.

Regarding the main topic, you could use a Linux-based computer and try ffmpeg to create your DVDs. Most Linux distros are and always will be free.

It’s 2020. DVD video is obsolete. Not only is it very low SD resolution, but few modern devices include DVD players.

These days, people upload their videos to YouTube, Vimeo, or some other video sharing site. That way, anyone you allow can watch it, any time, anywhere.

If you really want a disc, get a BluRay burner and Roxio Toast software, and burn a full HD disc. It will also make DVDs, but why?

Yet there are many who have and use DVD (and CD) for personal movies and music. Not everyone goes out and buys the most current or most recently released electronics.

Not all people upload their videos to the internet or share them with the public domain because not everyone wants their lives posted for anyone to see.

That is why!!!

Just a reminder for the Mac users who may not recall, not the Windows 10 0P.

Mac optical burner software is built in the OS. Highlight a file or folder, and just choose File>Burn from the Finder. Will burn to CD and DVD using Apple SuperDrive. I believe same goes for BluRay if you attach a BluRay burner instead.

Yes. I used a DVD+R and it worked perfectly when I made one in 2005. Perhaps it's because Windows 10 does not recognize Movie Maker anymore. I will be looking for another program to create & burn.

Thank you for your input. I am considerably older but in many respects I feel the same way about todays technology. It does much good but it truly is a double-edged sword. Regarding your suggestions concerning Linus and ffmpeg, I'm afraid they are Greek to me.

Thank you for your response but I do the dvds & cds for me. I do not care to share my photos, trips, experiences, etc with others I do not know. Neither do I feel the need to detail every thought, experience or daily occurrence with the world out there. I do it for my pleasure & I like having it in my hot little hand, much like our antiquated photo albums.

I have plenty of (old) DVDs in my library.

I password protect my private YouTube videos. Just because it’s on the ‘net does not mean it’s shared with the world.

I just make DVDs (M-Discs) for file backups, and video DVDs for the occasional person who wants them.

But I’m not one to favor old tech over new, OR switch to something new unless it provides me new utility.

If you are making DVDs then you have need of a burner program and a CD/DVD drive in your computers.

Thank you Steve for your helpful input. I am not interested in putting my pictures & videos online! Only in creating something tangible to enjoy on my tv. Your suggestions for burning programs are valuable. However, first I need a program to help me create something to burn, preferably free.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
