Sony 7r III with converter for Nikon F Mount.
Any experiences with this setup that would help me make the change to Sony. Nikon 24 120, 200 500. The reviews I have watched look like the focus speed is acceptable for still, but what about sports etc.

My experience with Nikon to Sony converters was extremely negative. I have the Nikon trinity and am now using them totally manual since my Commlite converter crapped out twice, first almost immediately after I bought it and then again soon after it was repaired. AF speed, when it worked, varied on the Sony A7R2. It did not work at all on the 14-24 and was about half the speed using the 70-200 as on a Nikon body. Metabones adapters for Canon lenses work very well, but no decent Nikon adapter exists. Some people seem to have luck with Vello and Commlite, but if you check user reviews you will see that about 50% rate them very low.

Better wait for the new Z cameras

It’s remarkable that the FTZ for the Zs has no negative reviews yet costs less than the various similar Nikon to Sony converters. Note also that Sony sells a reliable FTZ-like device for an FTZ-like price, for A-mount to E-mount. There is no rocket science involved. The terrible reputations of the Commlite and its ilk seems inexcusable.
As a Sony and Nikon user, I would find it obviously cheaper to pay even $500 for a RELIABLE Nikon to Sony converter rather than adding a Z body to my mix. I just want to be done with AF SLRs.
Both Nikon and Sony have proven that such converters can be built and sold for only $250. So wtf is up with these third parties’ failure to offer a reliable product at their current price of well over that of Sony and Nikon ?

The reviews I looked at are in line with your opinion. It seems to be a hit and miss and affair.

I've heard the same thing, and that's why I haven't bought one. I have a couple of Sony lenses, and they are all I need. I try to avoid adapters.

When I had an A7R-II I used a Vello KLAE-SE-NF adapter with good results, but I only used this with my 24-120 and 24mm T-S Nikon lenses for architecture and landscape photography.
I’m mostly a wildlife guy. Wondering about how that combo would work under those circumstances.
I read the whole thing. Pointless. Brief descriptions, not at all a user review or gear critic’s review. Totally superficial.
I must disagree, I use a Commlite adaptor for my Sony A7III and Nikon Holy Trinity plus a Sigma 60-600 lens. All work flawlessly although there is a very slight difference in Auto Focus speed.
This has allowed me to retain my Nikon glass and use it on both my D-500 and Sony. Used routinely with no issues even when I had my D-610

You might want to wait 11 days and see what the Z II’s bring to the table.

My commlite adaptor works great for my Sigma 135 f/1.8 Nikon-mount lens on my Sony a7iii. I haven’t tried it with the 24-70 f/2.8. Those are the only two full frame Nikon lenses that I kept when I sold the D500. See sample photo.
This is the one I got:
Commlite Electronic Autofocus Lens Mount Adapter for Nikon F-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera
