Curlew

A curlew in our garden early this morning. This is heavily cropped as they ( there were 3 ) kept retreating. During the night they scream out - hence our kids call them the "scary birds ".

Nice shot of the bush stone curlew! Didn't know they made that screeching sound. American curlews are shore birds with long, thin, down-curved beaks.

You are right. According to my bird books they are known variously as Bush-Stone Curlew or Bush Thick Knee. They inhabit much of Australia, mainly grassy areas and not sandy desert.

Thanks all for the positive responses.

As I type this at 6.30 am I can hear screeching in the background- probably from the park along the local creek about 100m away.
