I have the d3100 and SLT A55. One issue worth considering is the viewfinder system. I took a NM trip last summer and did a lot of desert shooting, including White Sands, NM. I loved the panoramic feature and the HD ability of the Sony, but the viewfinder was really lacking when used in the bright desert light. Both the LCD and the internal finder were very, very hard to see to focus or confirm focus. I use manual focus a lot and the Nikon was definitely better for that.

My first, second and third choices would be the Nikon D3200!
Im guessing the previous posters no nothing about Sony,I have the A57 with the same view finder and although I have never used it in a desert i would never go back to the old type the same goes for the live view.
Nikon every time.Can't beat it
I got a Sony last year....sorry I did, Canon is much more flexable. I get betty shots with my pocket Nikon.
I meant the Nikon. I let the sales person talk me i to it. Duh...

My guess is that you need to learn to correctly use the a65. BTW, rear screens are universally poor in bright sunlight.
I use the a77 (same EVF as the a65) alongside the a900, a full frame camera with arguably the best OVF around, in any case it's streets in front of the small offering in the D3100. Having focus peaking and focus magnify on the a65 makes it very easy to focus manually. No doubt that it beats the pants off anything else including split prism screens.
Have to admit I'm not too impressed with the Nikon D3200 after reading the reviews. It's good in parts - BUT: do you really need a 24 megapixel sensor on a "base model" camera? - (Huge file sizes = more computing power needed for processing). Also the rest of the camera hasn't really "caught up" with the sensor, so limited gains to be had. I'd either go for the D3100 OR the D5100, depending on your requirements & budget, and spend cash on good lenses. - I have the D5100 because I wanted the flip & swivel LCD screen facility.
PS: Sony ARE making some nice DSLRs, - depends if you're happy with the electronic Viewfinder there.

I am not too sure about the A65,but I have An A77 and the brightness of the viewing screen is adjustable. Also if you use the full time live view you can all was shade it in bright sunlight
