Thanks for posting these, Doddy. I’ve read about the wall, of course (history & English degrees), but never had a real feel for it until now with your photos.

Thanks for looking and comment John. the Large 'Housesteads' fort nearby is huge, and the museum there has some fantastic finds on show. They recently unearthed some clay writing tablets that had been discarded by the soldiers there, and one was asking for some warm underclothing and socks. Many of the troops stationed there were of course from the warm Mediterranean area...they must have thought they were being punished for being stationed in such a wild (dangerous) and cold place. When we were ther a few years ago, the carpark was full of coaches from Italy, they must come over to see the remotest part of their ancestors empire.

Thanks for the nice comment Mike. Yes, its an incredible structure (or was). I would have loved to have seen it in all its glory nearly two thousand years ago!

Our tour bus crossed The Wall at a different spot. Not nearly as interesting as your images show. Thanx for sharing.

Hadrians Wall runs 73 miles across the neck of Northern England, Emporer Hadrian started construction in 122 AD to keep the Northern Barbarian tribes out. Much of the stonework has been removed over the centuries for other building purposes, but it is still an impressive site with its accompanying forts (The largest being Housesteads and Birdoswald). In normal times it attracts Thousands of visitors a year. Google can tell you a lot more than me. We visited a section of the Wall at a place called 'Steel Rig'. We intended to visit the the Large fort of Housesteads, but I'm afraid 'Corvid 19' put paid to that!
