Looking seriously at a trip to the Amazon on the Ecuadorian end. Need to get top quality point-n-shoot with good video capability for birds and mammals. Prefer folks using cameras of this sort to respond.

How about "The Best"? Anyone is going to say nice things about his camera(s). here are experts, people who spend their lives evaluating photo gear giving you their opinions. Once you narrow down your choices, look for online comparisons.

Jerry is absolutely right on his comments. I shoot a Sony RX100vi, which I recommend and it is found on all of Jerry's online comparisons. Well, the newer model, the vii) The only downside to this camera is that the Sony menu is complex and takes awhile to get comfortable with it. So if you decide on this camera, get it now and practice practice practice.

I second the Sony RX100VII, with its 200 mm lens. Get and extra battery.

Jerry, thanks for this info (links). I should dump my D750 and get me one of these point-and-shoot models.

I agree with those who mention the Sony RX100 VII (7).

I have one, used it extensively with great results.

It has a 24-200 lens.

If you decide to purchase, also get Alexander White's book:
Photographers Guide to the Sony DSC RX100 VII.
It covers everything you need to know. Sony itself, is know for its poor documentation.

Regardless of how much I love the Sony RX100 series cameras, I doubt that you will get memorable images of birds and mammals with its 24-200 equivalent lens. It is slow at the long end, and pretty short at 200mm. I would suggest considering the Sony RX10M4 - it has a 24-600 F2.4-F4 lens, and though it won't fit in a shirt pocket like the RX100, I think it is better suited to your needs. You can see some of the images I've taken with it here:

Don't get me wrong, the RX100 is a great camera, but compared to the RX10, it would be like being a carpenter considering using a Prius instead of an F150 to go to the lumber yard.

Did you not read what the OP wrote, I will quote him here, "Prefer folks using cameras of this sort to respond". So I have to ask, do you use any of the camera's you quote? No, then why did you not read his post.

Having just recommended the Sony RX100 VII to you.

But if you need a longer lens, I agree that the Sony RX10 IV
is a superb camera with its 24-600 lens.
And it is not too large or heavy.

I rented one (from lensrentals.com )for my trip to Africa
and could not be more pleased.

The trip was 3 weeks but I rented the camera for 5 and also bought
Alexander White's book Photographer' Guide to the DSC Sony RX10 IV,
to get up to speed with the camera, pre trip.

On my trips I carry one point and shoot, the Sony HX99. Has a 24-750 mm Ziess lens, pop up viewfinder, shoots RAW and video's. It will not cost you an arm and a leg, I would get an extra battery and a few memory cards for your trip. This is one of the best, point and shoot values on the market today.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

One of the 10 best bridge cameras is the Panasonic Lumix FZ-300 which I bought in May of this year. The zoom is great as well as the video which you can use your own microphone. Took great moon shots as well as macro. Check out all the info on it and it won’t break the bank. Amazon has some very good bundled offers.

I always carry my HX-50 (original of the HX99) and sometimes it's the one I have to use. BUT the RX10m4 is the right one for the OP's needs. The image quality difference between these two cameras is huge. Also, the ergonomics of the RX10m4 are superb.

My a6500 has better IQ than the RX10 but the ergonomics favor the RX10 hugely. And for travel, the attached lens beats swapping lenses importantly.

The 600 mm vs 200 mm equivalent focal length will get you the shots in Ecuador that you want. 200 is just too short for birds and smaller, shy critters. Been there. Take my word. The extra size and weight is important but you did not specify "pocket". For pocket, the RX100m7 is the right choice but you give up a lot for that. The pocket ability of the RX100 is almost exactly equal to the HX99 so skip that one.
