Fooling the camera

I had heard that by playing with the scene modes on a point and shoot you could sometimes get the effect you desired. Being one that enjoys getting the most I can from any piece of equipment I thought it would be fun to try to get a photo with milky looking flowing water. I took my Panasonic FH20 to a local dam just as darkness as falling. I set the scene mode for night scenery and mounted the camera on a tripod. I set the self timer so as not to disturb the camera and got the following result. Not the greatest photo in the world but I did get what I wanted.

Not bad for an "auto" shoot - as you've noticed, the lowering light in the PM required a longer shutter speed, which gave you the milky, flowing water effect. I've seen some waterfall pics that were taken after dark, with only available (e.g. star and moon) light, and some are really quite good.

Hi JimH, Normally I would do this with my DSLR and a ND filter in the daylight. It was fun to see what could be done if it had to be done.
