You: Roger, You're correct that Mint is based off of Ubuntu and can use most of the same repositories. I original preference was Ubuntu as my desktop OS until it moved to Unity to run the desktop years ago. That was the first time I couldn't say that "linux can run on older systems well", LOL. That is when I made the switch to Mint.

Me: Jerry: Yes, so I moved to Xubuntu which uses a less demanding shell - xfce. I also did not like the look and feel of Unity.

You: As far as darktable, have you discovered Bruce Williams' Tutorials on youtube? He is a little long in the tooth, but each video typically concentrates on a single module and is explained very well.

Me: Thanks for the tip - I'll look him up. I've been fighting w/ my newly built PC: the PSU went POP! / BANG! a couple of days ago. Fixed today.

Another note: I "publish" albums using jAlbum. There's a bit of a charge after the first year but it's well worth it as the program is powerful and well maintained. Tech support is superb. I recently changed my "work flow." I organize w/ jAlbum. Then straight from jAblum, jump to The GIMP when editing is needed. My pics are at pics. I post to my personal web site on a shared host.

As I said, I'm not a pro - I just enjoy pictures and learning to do more with them. And, enjoyed learning about my new Olympus 4/3rds in the fall during a trip to Big Bend - there are some pics on the above mentioned site.

/Roger

Um, the white balance module in darktable uses parametric and/or drawn masks that are pretty darn powerful.

No it doesn't. You don't know how to use the software you're recommending?
johngault007 wrote:
Also, nice little trick to accomplish what you just mentioned....apply a mask in the WB Module and make changes...wait for it....open a second WB Module and apply your masks for the other changes.

Except that you can't open a second instance of the WB module.

I made the mistake of trusting that you knew the above operations were possible and so since I already knew they weren't possible in the latest Windows version of DarkTable I assumed it had to be a Windows/Linux difference. But that's not the case. The Linux version is the same as the Windows version.

How about that! You were completely blowing smoke and making up cr*p. You can't do any of that in DarkTable. And when you verified that I was right and the Windows version didn't permit it you probably also verified that the Linux version couldn't do it either. For shame.

Yes, you are correct. I did check in the linux version and white balance is locked. After I was finished with work, I went to my main PC and checked. I used the Color Balance Module along with some others to get the effect. But by the time I realized my error, you were so far gone in making sure that you could prove that I am incompetent in every possible way, that I really didn't feel like you deserved any amplifying corrections on my part.

And honestly, you don't deserve this response, but I decided it's now a fun adventure we are embarking on, and you are my co-pilot wherever this takes us.

Yours truly and most significantly!

Nice albums. I had a look around.

I'm not a pro "in photography" (I now have to qualify all my statements for you know who), but I am learning something new everyday in both the camera and post processing (I now have to qualify all my statements for you know who).

As 'you know who' has made it very clear, darktable is complex, and as a beginner, I am still learning about all of it's capabilities. But I'm glad there are people out there like Bruce to break down the modules and give some context behind how they are used.

So when you created that post you were being deliberately deceitful. It wasn't just the case that you incorrectly assumed how the WB module functioned. And in your further response (https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-664054-3.html#11562919) you maintained the deceit and even amplified it with this comment; "That doesn't bode well for those trying darktable on Windows for sure."

I have never attempted any such thing. You need to stop making up cr*p. I objected to one statement of yours that is inaccurate.

Wow! I didn't deliberately fabricate a deceit but I don't deserve this response. Wow! May I suggest you look up this word in the dictionary: integrity.

I'm sitting here drinking my morning coffee watching the opening day of La Liga (Spanish Soccer). The only thing that I enjoy more than that is finding out you have responded to my posts. At the end of the day I am honored that you have taken notice of me and are holding me accountable on an internet forum. I hope we can continue this great relationship we have formed.

I don't have negatives, so I haven't really looked into it, but I think darktable added the negadoctor processor as a module. Here is a youtube link with the most impressive Aurelien Pierre talking about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiNlHBZE888

Thanks for the tip about negadoctor! I updated DarkTable to 3.2.1, reprocessed a bunch of my negatives and compared them to RawTherapee’s output. Negadoctor’s results are far superior. Thanks for simplifying my workflow!
