It brings to mind what I did as a teenager in the 50s when working for a company who supplied all the cigarettes and candy to stores in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, we all used pocket knives to open everything and by placing your thumb about 8-10mm or 1/4" away from the tip of the blade. You can open most any carton and not damage the contents that way.

You can do almost the same with a box cutter (as long as you don't forget and are careful). We have a bit of a unique problem here with all the universal power supplies. The manf will ship the cartons with a US cord IN the foam but the NZ supplier will slice the carton open and biff in a 230v power cable. This often sits just inside the lid so you have to be super careful when opening.

One of my earliest jobs was as shipping clerk for a small high-end watch/clock company. My boss was an older gent named Edgar Phillips...Mr. Phillips to everyone in the office including the company president.
Mr. Phillips was the most organized and meticulous person I’ve ever met and he took great pains to teach me the right way to prepare and pack the watches and clocks for shipping. Initially, his efforts were annoying...I get it: wrap the item, put it in the box, put some stuff around it, seal it up, ship it out...but eventually I realized that taking the time to do it the right way mattered.
It may sound silly and out-dated but I learned a lot about responsibility and work ethics from Mr. Phillips. In addition, I’ve become the designated packer in our family in part because I know what I’m doing but more so because I can’t resist telling everyone they’re doing it wrong😊

Try using a propane torch to heat a knife to cut thru the tape as tho it were butter. Meat axes and axes are a bit harsh. If you use a just plain ol sharp knife start from inside and pull out toward your body just the reverse of what my Boy Scout Manual suggests.

I received several items lately that were packed very well, but there was one problem: too much tape. When you wrap the item in paper and/or bubble wrap, it's not necessary to tape that material in place. Once it's inside the box, the bubble wrap isn't going to undo itself and hide in a corner.

It might seem like you're being conscientious, but think of what happens at the receiver's end. He has to use a box cutter, scissors, or brute force to free the bubble wrap from the delicate item. That can damage the thing you were trying to protect.

My sentiments exactly. Items mummy wrapped in cellophane packing tape doesn’t do anyone any favors - excessive time and use of resources on the sending end and receiving end.

I, for one, am pleased that I have bigger things to concern myself with than the amount of tape on a package.

Additionally, on the sides of the box, if you start the blade about an 8th of an inch from the top and tilt the blade upward, you don't have to worry about damaging the contents. I also was taught this working in a grocery store years ago.

Can be annoying!

The other big annoyance are those blister packs - you have to destroy them to get your product out and you will scratch or cut yourself while opening them. SOME, too few, are designed to be resealable. Packaging designers have to rethink how they will be used by ordinary folk.

Next time you cut your finger trying to open one of those pacs sue them for bodily harm. That lady with the hot cup of coffee did!

Finally, common sense!

But driving an hour or two to a camera store isn't my idea of a fun way to spend the day. Flying to HI or CA is out of the question.
