The Anhinga is a very unusual bird in many ways:
• It's a fairly large bird
• It has short, stout legs & fully webbed feet for swimming
• It has a long neck & long stiff tail feathers
• It fishes for food while submerged under water
• Water wetted feathers reduce buoyancy for under water swimming
• Typically seen drying feathers with wings spread after swimming
• It's long neck is unusually flexible and maneuverable
I could watch these interesting birds for hours. I'm posting a number of photos of the same bird taken at two different times of the day that have greatly different looks. They emerge black and wet from the water to dry their wings. Once dry they may or may not preen and oil their feathers. And then they hop into the water for more fishing.
These were taken with a Canon 6D Mk II and 150-600C @ 600mm in my back yard pond with tripod and gimbal. Please use the downloads for a good view.
Wonderful set. Anhingas, also called Snake Birds, for their habit of swimming with their bodies totally submerged and only their heads and necks above water.

Great downloads and details Hereford.
Great shots! We saw a lot of these last week at one of our State Parks.
Excellent set of a fun bird!
Very interesting. Great photos and nice explanation!
Great shots of an oddball bird!
Could not be better...........
These are great, Hereford. Must be nice having your own pet anhinga!
You got me good with that one. Our pond is full of fish. The Anhingas, herons, egrets, etc all fished the pond heavily this summer raising and feeding their kids. Now they only stop by occasionally to self feed. Thanks for that great comment, CPO.
