In this era of Covid19, we see on TV that virtually all major professional sports are playing again...but there are no fans in the stands. We see boo-koo cardboard people in the first few rows, and that's it!
For example, in the NFL, the highest team salary is $271,000,000. and the vast majority of NFL teams have a team salary > $200,000,000. The same notion of team salaries, although to a lesser dollar extent, holds true for professional baseball, basketball, hockey & soccer.
The question becomes: How on earth can teams (in any sport) pay their players such exorbitant salaries with only cardboard people in the stands?

They get most of their revenue from TV.
And who really cares about pro sports anymore?

Do they not make far more through TV and other sources?
TV and advertising. Otherwise they wouldn't be playing to empty stadiums. Although teams do make less money without the fans in the stands.
As for who really cares for pro sports anymore. Probably people who read the subject line of this thread and not only open it up to read the contents, but also post a reply.
Couldn't agree more. Bunch of WAY overpaid people playing children's games.
A very large portion of your cable bill is to secure proprietary licensing for sports.
a lot of stadium money comes from Corps and box seat leases. Great write off and perks.

No security to shell out for. Money from the fans is of little importance to clubs these days whether it's NFL or Premier League.
With what is going on with the majority of professional athletes, who cares if they make money. Maybe if they loose enough, the salaries will drop, the owner profits will drop and when things get back to βnormalβ, pro games will be more affordable to the fans.. DEFUND PRO SPORTS INSTEAD OF THE POLICE.

Definitely. Although, without the hot dog profit, they could find themselves in trouble eventually.
Years ago, a pro baseball player came to the local Holiday Inn. You had to pay to get in to see him, and you had to pay more to get his autograph. One excuse they use for charging for autographs is that collectors make a lot of money selling them - yeah, millions of dollars.
I don't even watch them on TV, let alone driving into town and paying to stare at some guy.

Those overpaid athlete/entertainers don't warrant out sized salaries for something that contributes NOTHING of permanence to society or culture. Key word is Permanent as in future value.
