Looking for my best choice to check every box.
Using D850 only
Good AF
More compact and lighter then 24-70 f2.8
Family lens only not an “all around”.
Thinking about Nikon 16-80 dx af-s vr

Why would you put a DX lens on a D850?

How about a Nikon 24-120 f/4. I have a half dozen lens, but the 24-120 is the one I use most. It is the one that I keep on my camera, which is the D850.

Look at the 24-85. Even lighter is the plastic 28-80 G

To get the focal length, VR, fast / quality lens without the size and weight. Only to be used at family events.
Thanks

I AM assuming you have a 50mm f1.8 or an 85mm f1.8. I lent my 50mm to my daughter which she uses on her D7500 for family shots. Thursday we were at their new house for my grandson's sixth b'day party (family and grandparents only). She used the 50mm with no flash with great result.

For family events I use 24-70mm which is one of my favorite lenses. If your family events include activities that require a longer focal length then consider the 28-300 vrii.

I wouldn't use a DX on a D850 ... especially since that one sends you into crop mode, losing a lot of your sensor, so of those 2 I'd choose the 24-70.

If you are open to an alternative, the 24-120mm f/4 VR would be a better one lens choice.

A lot less expensive and saves more than enough to keep a 35 1.8 or a 50 1.8 in a jacket pocket ... with are extremely light in case you later decide you just have to have something faster than an f4.

That and the 24-120 plus either of the two lightweight 1.8 lenses ... both very sharp BTW ... are going to be extremely close to identical in weight to the 24-70.

My $0.02, I hope this helps.

You do know that you will cut your resolution in half with DX lenses? DX is less than 20mp.

Yes, mostly used on the web and print 4x6. Family shots only. Thank you

I would suggest you handle both the AF S Nikkor 24-85 1:4 G and the AF S Nikkor 24-120 1:4 G ED. The first is lighter, the second will give you reach beyond your primes. I have and use both, and depending on your evaluation of weight, either will provide added flexibility in family photo situations.

What's wrong with the 24-70?

the 24-120 is very heavy and you already have the best lens unless you are looking for telephoto
