Could you share information as to how you load images to your iPad and transfer to other storage, like an external hard drive? Or recommend a good resource for such information? I travel a lot and would like to leave my laptop at home. I would like to view images on the iPad, do some simple edits and convert from RAW to Jpg. I would like to be able to transfer images from the iPad to an external drive or simply duplicate the images from the iPad to the drive. Thanks for your help.

I have an adapter from SD card to lightning that imports pictures to Photos on my iPad. The pictures in Photos automatically sync to all my devices. From there I can import into LRCC which in turn sends the images to LrClassic in theory.

In the past, I used the iPad to store and view pictures taken each day on a trip. I left the pictures on the SD card and imported them the traditional way into LrClassic when I got home.

Now, however, I have noticed that all the pictures in Photos automatically download into LrClassic. This should simplify my workflow. I haven’t played around with it enough to know how well this works. For example, if I edit an image in Photos, does the edited version import into LrC?

My question is still “which iPad to buy” and “the best workflow from iPad to LrC (probably through LR mobile)”. I don’t want to waste time editing pictures on the iPad if those edits don’t transfer or if the screen isn’t good enough for accurate editing.

Update: I plan to play around with this workflow and will post my results...as soon as I decide which iPad will best suit my needs.

check my response above, it has lots of links to workflow possibilities, but everyone may need to experiment to find the right one for them.

Yes, your pictures can end up both places (LR and Photos), but you can download directly into LR on your ipad from the card and save one step. Your edits made in LR will transfer to LR on your home computer when you sync them. But your edits in Photos will not show up in LR. You can save your edited LR photos into Photos with a "save to camera roll" command.

Whatever ipad you buy, make sure it is compatible with Apple pencil and has enough memory and storage for your particular needs.

Getting a grasp of how to set up the sync preferences between computer and ipad, between LRCC and LR Classic, between Photos and LR, is essential to a satisfactory workflow.

Do you edit on your iPad? If so, the Pro or the Air? I would most likely only do light edits on an iPad. I’m better at “getting it right in the camera” than I used to be!

The latest iPad Pro uses the latest apple chip but it has less screen than the 13 inch Air. The 2020 Air can have up to an i7 10th gen intel chip, 16 GB Ram and a TB SSD. It tested out as the 3rd fastest Mac on the latest Geekbench. I'm 71 so screen size is critical for me to do pp. Costco has a great sale on the air right now. Just bought one for my daughter. I use some AI (laughs) topaz apps that are slow on my iMac 2011 but tested them on a friend's new Air and was shocked at the speed. So my two cents, buy the Air unless you are planning to do your pp in the field because you are under a deadline.

I use an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to do all my editing and am very happy with the results. Although, if a photo needs REALLY serious work or you have many to do a computer might still be a better choice. Go to an Apple Store and talk to them and they will set you straight on compatibility issues and which model you need.
It’s the same price wherever you buy it.

Good idea..I will do that. Thanks for your input!

So I checked my scores.

The iPad Pro has a single core rating of 1114 and a multicore 4654
The Air i7 is 1136 and 3018.

So I stand corrected. And if you get the 12.9 inch iPad the screen size is a wash but the two issues are the software is not the same and you only have 1 usb-c on the iPad

I only have the iPad Pro, 2019 edition, so I think it’s the latest edition. It’s the 12.9” screen, with 256Gb storages. I find it is fast and easy to at least reasonably edit photos. I use Apple’s Photos program, LR mobile, PS Express, PS Fix and Affinity Photo for iPad. Although it has just one USB-C port, you can get a “hub” that has several different built-in ports and plugs right into the iPad’s USB-C port. I also have the Apple SD to USB-C card adapter. I can do pretty much anything I want, for what I need, yet an actual computer would be ideal. It’s a lot easier to transfer/copy/move files around, and copy photos to an external storage device with, say a MacBook Pro or Air. But for general use, the iPad Pro is a great tool, plus, as someone else mentioned, you can check email, get on the internet, and all that when you’re out and about on vacation.

I’m primarily interested in the iPad for a way to store photos while on vacation, and then to view and edit them during my down time at night. I just didn’t know if the iPad Pro was that much better than the iPad Air. Then there is the question of which keyboard cover to get and, of course, I would want the iPencil! If anyone has used the new iPad Pro for this, I would be very interested in what they thought.

I will be going to Best But to look at my options. An Apple store is an hour drive from me.

In the next two months Apple is supposed to release 5G models (phones and iPads). You might want to wait. My only complaint on my 2018 12.9” pro is my constant battle with keystroke sensitivity. Have to hit the screen several times. If you look on line you’ll see I’m not the only one.

I have a MacBook Pro that I took on my last trip and it worked flawlessly. My next trip will be overseas and I prefer not to take the computer. I won't be under a deadline on the next trip. My deadlines are to get senior pictures out and I will do those on my iMac at home. Thanks for your input.

Thank you. This is exactly what I need. I do realize that working directly on the desktop is preferred. Did you get the magic keyboard/cover for yours and do you use the pencil?

Good to know. I wonder if the magic keypad or even the regular keypad would resolve this problem.

Thank you for clarifying. It sounds like my best bet is to use LRCC on the iPad. I did not know you could import into LRCC directly from the SD card. I would probably have to disable the SD pictures from loading into Photos.

I'm leaning towards the iPad Pro with 256GB storage. My current "dying" iPad has 128 GB and it is not even half full. The remaining question is whether I need a keyboard cover.

Additional:

One last choice is WiFi or WiFi + cellular. I don't see a need for WiFi + cellular. Thoughts anyone?

I followed up on this information and due to the pandemic, this release probably won't happen until early 2021. Apple is also going to start using a mini-LED screen in the iPad Pro instead of an OLED screen. Both upgrades will probably not happen this year.

My current iPad Air bit the dust and I’m looking at the new iPad Pro. I plan on taking a trip soon and wanted to leave the computer at home. My question is this: Can I get accurate edits using LR CC? I currently use LR Classic and Photoshop. I read that Photoshop is now available for iPad. Does anyone have experience using this combo? Also, what about the iPad Air (3rd generation)? I searched this site and only found posts on this subject from 2015.

There's nothing you can do about it and Apple doesn't tell you, you just have to experience it. Apple has seen fit to create your iPad so that as it gets older, it won't accept any more updates to your operating system, so if you want some of he latest software that relies on the latest IOS updates, too bad, you're out of luck. You have to buy a new later version iPad.

I have a first gen iPad Pro 12.9“ screen, 256g and got the one with cellular. It give me the ability to add a SIM card when out of country or no Wi-Fi available. Also my understanding is still that all iPads without the cellular option do not have built in GPS. I love having any photos that I take with it to be geotagged. I use the sd card dongle for camera photo transfer as that is much faster then Wi-Fi. I use lR and photoshop on the iPad for editing. Can be a little slow and on my older iPad Pro I may have to restart the LR app after a few extensive edits or it will lockup. Overall I’m happy. No heavy laptop to drag through airports.
