Tolmie's Saxifrage at Off Trail Lake

First morning sun rays lighting up Tolmie's Alpine Saxifrage, SW Olympics.

This lake takes some big effort to get to, but the reward is phenomenal. No signs of previous visitors, though I have to suspect that there have certainly been some people here.

My friend was running out of steam, until he first set his eyes on the lake from a pass about 1100 feet above.

Caught him well-rested with camera at the ready the next morning, waiting for the sun to stream in.

I can't remember the name of the lake, but I did a killer hike that was like a 2200 foot incline to photograph mountain goats in the Olympics on the Hood Canal side ,Constitution ? Many, many years ago. I think it started with a C. Constitution ? We had to grab hold of exposed tree roots to help climb up the steep trail. At dawn I spied a pair of goats high on a trail above the lake where we had camped. I went back to sleep and when I awoke the goats were about 15 feet away from me. They had come down for salt that had been deposited by hikers emptying themselves at the campsite.

I'm going to guess Mildred Lakes, up the Hamma Hamma River. That trail gains about 2200-2400 feet with a whole bunch of exposed tree roots. Also, the goats are up there above the main lake. Did you ever get some shots of the goats?

Yes, I did the hike to photograph the Goats for a story in Sunset Magazine on a freelance assignment. I did about 1,000 assignments for Sunset over a 30 year period.

Sunset Magazine was a 'required reading' all through my house when I was younger. What a fantastic publication. That is GREAT that you did assignments for them. Did you use medium format, or 35mm, or a combination of both?

Here's a "local" goat for you, up in the SE Olympic Mountains. Taken with a Fuji GX680, a sort of monster of a medium format camera.

That's a wonderful Mountain Goat portrait, far better than any I ever made. Sunset was a real family magazine during the years I worked with them. It began to change when Time Inc,-AOL purchased stand it really went down hill in most peoples opinion. The content is now based on upper income folk and no longer the family magazine I know when it was owned by the Lane family.

I used primarily 35 MM on my assignments. Don Normark who was a real gentleman did about 3,000 assignments for Sunset during his career. Both of us worked primarily for the Seattle based office with Nancy Davidson and her staff.

You are quite right, bertloomis. Live and learn...I only took one shot with my friend in the image, and then later regretted that I hadn't shot a couple of the same scene without a person in it. I think that, when I thought about it later, I even put my hands on my knees and said to myself, "sheesh, you didn't get one with just the landscape, dumba**? Haha!

I was up taking a shower, and thought about that. I will give it a try, though I'm not too good at it. You want to see the results, shaky as they might be?
