Has any of you UHHers had experience with the Fuji X-A5? I would appreciate your comments, good or bad. How much of a negative is the absence of a viewfinder? Thanks.

You are probably right, but even with my latest iPhone SE, I don't get the IQ that I get from my 16MP Olympus EPL 5. Maybe it's the photographer!!

If I don’t have a viewfinder then IQ is of no concern to me. OTOH if a device has superior IQ then it’s certainly worth being able to accurately compose and focus the intended high IQ image.

Speaking for myself, I think you would be very pleased with your X-A5, EVF or not. I bought a Sony RX 100 Miii and had to that point been using Samsung Note8, with a very good cellphone camera. Mine does have an electronic view finder though I find I have rarely used it. Immediately you will notice a depth of field and fullness from your camera that you just couldn't obtain from the cellphone. It looks like the X-A5 would be small enough that you might be inclined to carry it more often, and again, I think you will be very pleased with the purchase of it. This is just the viewpoint of an extreme novice, but a happy one.

I switched to Fuji. Purchased an X-3 - handles like my long gone Leica M2, but much lighter. Feeling a need for a backup body, purchased a mint X-A5 and later, a refurbished X-A3. Both are great; take all X mount lenses with great electronics. I even like the Q menu feature - which some don’t.
Now the down side. No viewfinder, No viewfinder, No viewfinder. Outdoors you are effectively shooting blind... blind... and blind. For inside they are fine. But... I don’t like the touch screen take-a-pic thing. Way to sensitive and you can’t turn it OFF permanently.
Now my walk around is the X-E3 with 23mm prime lens. My second body is an X-T1 which lives with 2 zoom lenses in a Domke bag. X-T1 is older, all metal, and without all the so-called “improvements” of the X-T2,3,4, etc. Like my f:stops on the lens barrel and shutter speeds on the top. Rest is non-essential. See Ken Rockwell on the X-T1.

The X-E3 cost a little more but runs rings around the X-A5 imho.

It is what it is - high point is it uses great lenses, low point is no viewfinder. Cheap way for a backup body or to use other lenses with an adapter. I'd get a real fuji used for the same money.

Great IQ at a relatively inexpensive price. Less than alot of phones.
IQ not a function of a viewfinder. You can accurately compose and focus on the lcd screen.
What price are you looking at? The newer model X-A7 is on sale $499.
X-E3 is great but no tilting screen and higher price.

Can't find the keypad on my Olympus E-PL5 - and it doesn't have voice control either. Just can't seem to make a call with it no matter what I try

I too love my XT-1. Just as I loved my Nikon FM so many years ago. Just a sensible, elegant little workhorse of a camera. It does not do all sorts of exotica, but what it does do, it does well!

Hadn’t thought about, but you right. X-T1 and my Nikon F (film days). A lot in common. No meter prism, ASA 400 settings in my head. See Fred hutchings, Hurricane Camille. But now we re off topic. Apologies

I loved my Nikon FM too Cat, but I loved it more than any digital camera I've used.
It was a better "machine" to use than my D700... which imho is as good to use
as any digital body (Canon does not come close) under 5 digits.
Having said that, a D3 I used was darn nice to control and maybe challenge the D700...
but not the FM... crisp but light controls, an exquisite mechanical feedback.
