Riddle...
A cop was walking past a restaurant when he heard someone scream, "No John, not the gun!" He ran inside and and saw a doctor, a lawyer, a milkman, and a dead body on the floor. He promptly walked over to the milkman and arrested him. He didn't witness the shooting and there was no apparent evidence to prove who shot the person and no one told him who the killer was. How did the policeman instantly know it was the milkman?

The only man in the room named John was the milkman.
I'm going out on a limb with this one, but.... Most people would assume the doctor and lawyer are males. If that assumption were incorrect and they were females and the milkman was a male, the officer would put the name John with the only male alive and in the restaurant at the time.

That's what I thought. One man and two women. Now if it was Pat, Leslie, Sam, etc, it could have been any of them.
1 He was the only man in the room
or
3 He was the only one holding a gun
or
4 He was the only one not wearing a mask in the restaurant, so obviously...
or
it is #2 but I won't tell because I don't want this sent to the Attic.
Name badge on his uniform?

Sometimes I like to think outside the box. The milk truck was out front and the license plate had the name John on it.
Short answer:Because the milkman would be the easiest person to convict for the crime. He has no money so he will have a crap lawyer.
Long answer:
When he went in, the doctor was trying to revive the dead man, The lawyer was noting down what happened with voice recorder, and the milkman wearing a coverall with a stitched name John dropped the gun as he walked in.
What actually happened:
The dead mans first girlfriend was the lawyer but he decided to marry her best friend the doctor.
Unknown to the doctor, the lawyer although very angry at the dead man continued to have relations with him.
The milkman who is a mute was the doctor's neighbor since grade school and her former boyfriend. She left him for the deadman. While delivering he caught the deadman and the lawyer cheating. He demanded to be compensated otherwise to tell the doctor. The lawyer told him to come again next day and get his prize. She actually hatched a foolproof plan.
The lawyer shot the deadman while screaming "no john not the gun" on her recorder and then threw the gun to the milkman who caught it with both hands accidentally shooting it again but hitting the far wall. The doctor rushed in to see her husband dying and her former boyfriend the milkman holding the gun. She did what she can but he succumbed to his wounds. In rushed the policeman who is a secretly a brother of the lawyer and have planned the murder with her. They were adopted and grew up by different families.
end it however you like....

I'm glad I said I had no idea.
We had a winner with the very first answer.......
The milkman was the only male.
The doctor and lawyer were females, so the cop knew that "John" was the milkman!
