Walking around this weekend on our land, and I grabbed a few images of this guy...I had my T3i with Sigma 17-70 mounted on it and when I cropped in on the image, was just imagining what I could have captured with a real macro lens. That pushed me over the edge between wanting and NEEDING a true macro lens. It's a whole new world and I think I want to dive in with both feet!

I am now looking for best deal on Canon 100mm true macro, L series. Wish me luck :)

Your grasshopper is nicely detailed, which means critical focus is there. A bit "hot" on the head (sun above & behind). I see noise in the background, which is mostly from excessive cropping to reach macro proportions. A macro lens will make you happy.

Thanks for the feedback, agree with all you say, especially about a real macro lens making me happy!

Good luck on your shopping! I just recently got the Canon 100mm 2.8L IS. I am definitely still learning and will be for a long time, but am enjoying it immensely! I feel like a little kid when i look through the lens. I can't believe the things you can see that you had no idea were even there! I doubt you will regret your purchase.

Ditto from me! Looking at insects and other small things through the macro lens lets you see so much cool detail...you may get some weird looks from "normal" folks, but welcome to the macro world 8-)

My wife doesn't like me shooting macro...You see, it's become an obsession & now I need a 12 step program...Good luck convincing your hubby & playing with the lens once you get it!
