I have this lens. I like it a lot, but don't have and can't find a manual for it. The question that I am trying to answer is; What is the function of the mark on the ring right behind the focus ring? The mark is an A, a long line and a dot.

If you know, or even better if you have a digital copy of the manual I would love to find out.

Turning the large ring to the dot increase the friction on the focus ring to make manual macro focus A bit easier. It does not move the camera to manual focus so you must put in manual focus First. It is basically a friction clutch.

The links for the Nikon manuals are for the manual focus version of the 55mm f2.8, not the AF 55mm f2.8. version.

I use the manual focus version. I do not know the answer to your question.

Thanks to all! I got my answer.

It is a friction clutch for manual focusing.
