New TV - Decision Time

I'm most likely going to need a new 50" TV, since the fluttering electric supply fried mine yesterday. The other TV is a Vizio, so I want another similar one so the remotes will work on both. I don't want to go to a store and deal with teenage salesmen trying to up-sell me and then try to fit into my Honda Fit, so I'll be shopping online.

Amazon has a Vizio like mine, renewed, for $339. A new version of that one is $500. I've had good luck with refurbished cameras and hard drives, but I'm wondering about a renewed TV. Nope! The renewed has a 90-day return policy, while the new one has a 1-year warranty. In addition, the new one comes with a polishing cloth!

Time to start looking for reviews!

EDIT: It's working! My "broken" Vizio is working fine. I guess it just needed a rest overnight.

I've got two large Vizio's ( 55 and 60 " models) and one older, smaller Samsung (32"). Oh, I almost forgot a small Haier in the kitchen (oldest one)... I used to have an LG but I had to have it serviced and have since given it away...I like the Vizios.... Oh I've got a Samsung sound bar hooked up to the living room Vizio. I don't think you can go wrong with either Samsung or Vizio but YMMV...

I have two 32" LGs that are awesome. I bought a 43" Samsung that constantly annoys me does not maintain an WiFi connection, I have to resented password and reconnect almost daily. Never had that problem with the LG with a Rocky connected. A friend bought a 55" Samsung at the same time and he has issues with the remote.

I see that the Samsung in question has Alexa built-in. You may have a different opinion, but I would pay extra NOT to have the TV listening to me.

Jerry, as you might know from some of my posts here, I haven't had a TV since 2002. Yup, gave up on it. So, I can't help other than to say you're very insightful in many of your posts and the advice you've provided to others. So, put yourself outside of yourself and pretend you are another UHH member and what advice would you give someone asking or confronted with the same issue? Then, follow your own advice.

About a year ago I had a Vizio that worked perfectly except all it could receive was junk so I gave it away.

Good for you. We are a TV free house too. Got rid if it and never looked back. Don't miss it.

Anything wrong with teenage salesmen? Are you judging on knowledge or just age? What age do you consider appropriate to be selling TVs?

When I lived in NYC I was an inveterate movie goer, especially foreign art films. As a boy, I never missed the weekly double features at the local movie house. Now, I have installed a 65" LG OLED 4k tv in a small room with four separate speakers plus a sub woofer. I sit in a recliner 6' away from the screen and enjoy one of my favorite pastimes other than eating and traveling. If I can't find a film via streaming, I usually can find it on my subscription to Netflix Blu Ray DVD. The quality of the picture is incredible. Velvety blacks, every pore visible in someone's face.

I would not purchase a used TV but more importantly, I have always found that Walmart has much better prices and you can order it on line and pick it up at the store! Amazon is easy shopping but does not discount anything!

My approach is simple, find the best Sony I can afford, find the best price from a reputable dealer and buy it. Then, bite my tongue and pay for recycling the one replaced.n
