Looking at top wedding magazines, it appears that the current style is to overexpose which blows out highlights and loses texture in the gowns and washes out skin tones. This not what most of us strive for.

Must mean either the new photographers or their clients never studied the great painters or current experts

As long as the clients like it it's fine. I think a lot of photographers think doing so giving the pictures film look.

Perhaps, the new photographers use "Trendy" (as suggested by my esteemed colleague) as a means of covering up the fact that they are clueless regarding exposure.

Yea, it'll go away and the people stuck with these images will be disappointed later.

Stupid trends...

Hahaha. Know of anyone who specifically asked for that style?

If you look at really old wedding albums the images are faded and washed out. When viewed on a couples 50th anniversary they emphasis the nostalgia. Since today's prints are not supposed to fade, and for those folks who pack their albums away for 30, 40, 50 years, these washed out images are the perfect product.

"...Looking at top wedding magazines..." Lexartiste why did you avoid documenting the source of your inference? I've noticed that 2 of your only 3 post have the tell tail signs of a troll... First you bait a response with Kate Moss, now you try to invoke controversy by baiting with the most lucrative genres, Commercial Wedding Photography...

Lexartiste trolls generally serve only a single purpose... that is to gain recognition from their peers... Since you are late to the dance Lexartiste please allow me to suggest that you instead strive to impress with stellar photographic artistry, tearsheets etc. By attacking the work of others you diminish you own perceived worth, value and credibility in the eyes of those who actually work in the wedding industry.

To others who seem compelled to cast stones against an unidentified source... Really?

As a wedding photographer the lion's share of my assignments come first and foremost from referrals... Followed at considerable distance by Wedding Wire and my on-line presence, most recently IG... My visual statement remains constant thus the MOB knows exactly what she is buying into... As all wedding shooters know, while the bride's wishes and desires are paramount it is typically the MOB who signs the check...

Best advice on this post? Wedding Wire if used with diligence will reveal many of the top competitors in your market... Always nice to appreciate with whom you are competing... https://www.weddingwire.com/

All the best on your journey Lexartiste and I certainly look forward to seeing actual posts of your commercial wedding endeavors

Please stay safe; practice social distancing and always wear a mask while in public...
Food for thought: Our studio's Hair Stylist has had 38 brides cancel so far this year.
Until a vaccine becomes available Wedding Events are pretty much off the table...

If you are working for a client and that's what the client wants, then you will need to be able to do that. It's not simply a matter of over-exposing, but knowing how to over-expose in a manner that is visually pleasing... something that is far more difficult to accomplish than it first seems.

Wrong. Your vision must be impaired or maybe the magazines you are looking at aren't really the "top wedding magazines" The ones I looked at from this list didn't have the issues you describe. An opinion without source or fact is worthless. It's all in your head, my friend.

I don't know if they asked for it but I know plenty who paid for those.
