Got my new R5 Friday and had the opportunity to do a few tests yesterday regarding the "eye" tracking focus system. I've followed several of the other posts over the past few days regarding other issues, so will keep this simple. My first reaction is overwhelmingly positive. These were literally the first attempt, and from about a 30 frame burst, 24 were tack sharp. I was using a 600II lens on a tripod. Didn't have time to get the light right, so from a photographic perspective lots wrong, but the focus system is absolutely remarkable from this very limited test.

The EOS R5 will change how we think about mirrorless, how we think about photography, how we think about life.

Great examples of the future of photography!

Very impressive and thanks for sharing. Everything I read about the R5 makes it the top mirrorless performer right now. It blows Nikon out of the game (I am a Nikon dslr shooter) and is an improvement over the best Sony has to offer. With all the positives, there is one negative I read about - overheating. Keep us informed as you run it through its paces.

It risks overheating when shooting 8K video for 20+ minutes, something probably easily avoided.

BTW - what is 8k video you might ask? That's video that plays on a screen 8000 pixels wide with no compression. You're probably sitting at a screen that is 1920-pixels wide, maybe watching TV on your 4K high-def TV at 3000 to 4000 pixels wide. Who / what / why are you shooting a single 22-minute video at 8K?

Mostly shoot stills, so longer video is not an issue for me, but read a lot of those who shoot video crop, just like higher resolution stills give you more room to crop, so does higher resolution video. Maybe you can help with some rumors. I heard that if it's being used in the sun in hot weather even continuous shooting can be problematic. That's important to me as a birder. I also heard it's already been recalled for overheating. In any case, I'm seriously considering one. I'm tired of waiting on Nikon.

You're welcome to find any statement from Canon regarding recalls or delayed shipments. Hint: there are none.

@OP:

No problem with the lighting ! Somebody has saddled you with a numbnutz concept about what constitutes “getting the light right”. Back lighting is an excellent way to light feathery critters (and other subjects) and the execution in the first two shots is perfect. I suspect the third shot has an under exposure problem, but it’s still a rather decent grab and even a possible “teachable moment”. If it hasn’t yet seen any serious PP then there’s likely one more winner lurking within it.

%#%##%%}{}#%}}#%%}%#{%

BTW, a crude but effective check for excessive heat, without tripping a safety switch, is to shoot about four long exposures in rapid succession, 30 to 60 sec each, lens cap on, under a blanket, at a six-digit ISO with all noise reduction disabled. If you see two three hot pixels that’s normal. A whole constellation of them is not good. The overall image will not be black but most likely a colorful field of noise, which may get noisier as the sensor gets hotter.

If you don’t get more than two or three hot pixels you have the evidence to inform the heat rumor trolls about reality. And if you do get too many hot pixels, at least you find your working limits by comparing each test frame to the next.

The new Fuji mirrorless camera's will change how we think about mirrorless, how we think about photography, how we think about life.
My old Nikon D3s will change how we think about mirror camera's, how we think about photography, how we think about life.
My D500, D850, and D5 will change how we think about mirrored camera's, how we think about photography, how we think about life.
ANY CAMERA IN THE HANDS OF A COMPETENT PHOTOGRAPHER will change how we think about camera's, how we think about photography, how we think about life.
There has not been a mirrorless made that can replace the eye and imagination of a competent photographer.

With the wrong camera, success is probably 99% luck. But with a mirrorless camera, it's 100% the photographer.

Impressive, clear, detailed shots of that eagle! Just kidding. I know an osprey when I see it!
Very good job! I plan to get an R5 before year's end. Thanks for the shots.

Thank you Paul....PERSPECTIVE MATTERS....and a breathe of Fresh Air doesn't hurt either. The 5R will produce incredible images and 4K video is all I will ever need as I do virtually no video anyway. The overheating issue is just another partisan-distraction from people that watch too many YouTube videos and repeat what they see as Gospel......how could they possibly be wrong?
