Looking for a camera for my wife who is an occasional picture taker, wants something affordable, easy to use, self-contained, takes a decent picture, isn't too big/heavy and doesn't require a bunch of extra attachments/lenses/gear to carry. I've heard that the Canon SX50 HS fits her needs. From those of you who own one, is that true? Does anyone have one that is in good working order, that they aren't using much and might want to sell? If so, please PM and let me know.
Thanks,
dickw

Had the SX50 for a while; when the flash died replaced with the SX60.
Both fun and easy to use and handle.
Would not hesitate to recommend either.
Good luck.

Thank you foodie65. Appreciate your thoughts. How did the SX60 compare to the SX50?

I had an SX40 and wish I still had it. It was (is) great for all the reasons you mention. (I succumbed to the lure of a DSLR.) I hesitate to enter the realm of rumor, but when the SX50 came out I recall there were numerous remarks made in forums that it was not up to the standards of the SX40. Then came the SX60 and SX70. On the basis of those forum remarks I would suggest you pass on the SX50 and pick up an SX40, or go directly to the SX70. But before doing either, I would hope you would gather more views on the SX50.

At first I liked the SX 50 better but as I used the SX60, for me I can't say one is better than the other. If it is a major concern, the zoom for the 60 is longer (and more sensitive) than the 50.

I recently sold my SX50 to purchase a Sony RX 10 MKIV. The SX 50 was a phenomenal camera. I talked my son-in-law into buying one a couple of years ago right after I bought mine and he still has, uses, and loves it. So, that's two thumbs up for the SX50. Easy to use with excellent results in a compact package.

I purchased and used a new Canon SX50 and loved the camera. Sold it to get some money out of it since I had several other cameras and later regretted it so much I bought another one and still have it. Do some research and you will find the SX50 was frequently rated better than the SX60 that replaced it. I can't compare to the earlier SX40 but never saw reviews saying SX40 was better than the SX50. I am attaching a moon shot that I took recently with the SX50 and only slightly cropped it on the computer. This camera has astounding zoom.

Dick, about a year ago I bought a refurbished Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS60 for a friend of mine who broke her ZS35. Anyway, she's never used it. She wanted to sell it, and I think she still has it.

Here are two comparisons: https://cameradecision.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-ZS60-vs-Canon-PowerShot-SX50-HS and http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-PowerShot-SX50-HS-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-ZS60-(Lumix-DMC-TZ80).

I also have a ZS60 personally, and like it extremely well. My local camera shop (Mike's in Denver) also loves this camera. I can't speak to the SX50.

If you're interested I'll get the two of you in touch.

Good luck getting hold of the SX50, as it went out of production, replaced by the SX60. I had the SX50 for several years (until it it gave up the ghost) and found it to be the best bridge camera I ever had. I showed a friend (who said bridge cameras were 'toys') a shot of Jupiter and 4 of its moons..he was amazed. I have had a couple 50 * zoom bridge cameras (sony and panasonic) since, but none came anywhere near the quality of shots like the Canon SX50!

I have an SX50. It is a great little camera. I do remember that when the SX60 came out, most reviews I saw claimed that it was not as good as the 50, but I personally can't verify that.

One thing I will say is, the SX50 has the worst manual I have ever seen, for *any* product! It was my first digital camera, and I had a heck of a time figuring it out. It has some options which are on by default, and you cannot find them in the manual unless you know exactly what Canon calls them. I remember trying to take photos of Christmas lights around the neighborhood and it kept taking looong exposures, no matter what settings I used. There is some feature which will override the controls , unless you turn it off. May be obvious to someone who is used to digital cameras, but my last had been a Canon A1... Also, the manual is unreadable, in the sense that every single section refers to another which is many pages away. That one will refer to somewhere else, and so on...

Honestly, great camera, dismal manual!
