I don't think it's a cardinal or a woodpecker, which are the only birds with red that I've seen around here (Capital District, NY).

Would very much appreciate someone's help in the ID.

Thanks very much.

Looks like a molting male Cardinal to me.

My Google Lens app says Purple Finch. Download the Google Pictures to your phone. When you open a picture, click the Google Glass icon at the bottom and it will analyze your photo for you. Name plants, cars, dogs, cats, insects, birds. I use it to identify my antique cameras.

That would be an adult male Red Crossbill--or possibly White-winged Crossbill. The pinkish-red coloration is more like the White-winged (Red generally has more of a dull red). If you saw two strong white bars on the outside of the wings, it would be White-winged. Their bills are specialized for breaking into pines, spruces and firs. Both are very uncommon, and your local bird club would likely be very interested in the report.

Male house finch, that shade of red is not right for the Purple finch, at least not as it looks to me. But around Albany it could be either as both are year round residents and fairly common. Look up House Finch on All About Birds (Cornell University).

OK, I looked at the post enlarged and what I thought was a seed in its bill could be the tips of the bill crossing. So the male Red Crossbill now seems to be in the running.

Yep. That would be a rare one for me:

Great! I’m actually happy to have been wrong. Definitely learned more about bird ID.

I see it as a house finch. Pretty red.
They vary in color from red to orange to pink to yellow.
We see tons of them in Arizona

Attached are a few sample photos I have taken of House Finches.
