If you can include a drive on "The Tail of the Dragon" on your way up...great photo opps, also anywhere along Blue Ridge Parkway, fantastic rides.

If you are staying in Gatlinburg area, I recommend Roaring Fork (Grotto Fall is here), Greenbriar because it is less crowded and beautiful fall color on the creek, Laurel Falls (go very early to beat the crowds) and the drive up to the Chimneys picnic area for fall color. Anywhere on Little River road is beautiful BUT, the recent storm my have damaged the prettiest places near Townsend Y and Tremont. I would not attempt Cades Cove from Gburg area. My experience is you have to leave Gburg and drive 28 miles and arrive at the gate before daylight to beat the bumper to bumper traffic in the Fall. If you are staying in Townsend it may be possible to arrive early since it is a shorter drive. The smokies are made for photography. Have a good time.

I love Cades Cove it is really beautiful in the GOLDEN HOURS too. I love the Smokies and the Blue Ridge too. You can load a 16 gig or 8 gig card up very quickly there while shooting, I would love to see these photos I want to go there so bad myself. I love riding my motorcycle there too. That is GODS Country too.

I live here at the foot of GSMP (18 miles from Townsend). You must make the trip through Cades Coves. You can hike to Abrams Falls from a parking area in Cades Cove. It is a long hike. Grotto Falls is a shorter hike but you will have to access it from The Roaring Fork drive in Gatlinburg. Laurel Falls is an easy hike with a paved trail that is off Little River Road heading toward Gatlinburg. Newfound Gap overlook and Clingmans Dome are close together at the Tenn-NC line. Hike the trail to the tower at Clingman's Dome. You will be glad you did. It is a very short uphill walk. You should continue on in to NC for some spectacular scenes. Keep in mind that Cades Cove is very crowded in October so just plan a day for it. Be sure to take the side trip down Sparks Lane and Hyatt Lane. They are both two-way. Turn around and come back to the loop road on either of these or you will miss most of the loop road since it is one-way.

Are you planning to hike or ride? As posted you are in the season and many visitors in the park. There are drives that will provide animal shots on Roaring Forks motor trail, Cades Cove Loop. The best times for the cridders in early morning and late afternoon, same true with lighting.
There are over 900 miles of marked trail not counting the manways.

On the contrary, I can hike quite well and I do. I also walk 5 miles 5 days a week. I have hiked many of the trails in the Park, and yes, taken a lot of photos. :)

My wife and I just got back from a 4 day adventure in the Smokies this September. We always love visiting the area...there's just so much to do and see. And for Pat who is curious about the area...below is a link to my Cades Cove slide set to give you some idea about Cades Cove. It's a valley surrounded by low mountains. The car route takes you on a 14 mile journey around the perimeter of the valley. The park is full of old churches built in the 1800's. Several cabins built by early settlers of the region. Lots of wildlife, we didn't see a Bear this trip, but have on previous visits. The day we toured it was very stormy and rainy, but that didn't stop us. My wife and I both have severe arthritus, so hiking for us unfortunately is limited. But there's plenty to see by car. The link below will launch a slideshow that automatically advances through the images. Click on the "full screen" button at the lower right for best viewing. Lensmanicu, take in as much as you can, there is a ton of sights to see in GSMNP.
Enjoy...James

We were there years ago, all great, Laurel Falls, Cades cove but we stayed in Gatlinburg, there was a "Motor Nature Trail" there, part of the park, one way, took a mini van through it, I think that's the largest vehicle allowed, very interesting, preserved houses and water powered mills, don't miss the old mill and restaurant near Dollywood, there is also a craft loop just outside Gatlinburg that we found out about the day we were leaving, Bob.

Actually I have not been in that area since the storms. But some of the damage was to Little River Road which is completely open. Here is a website that will help you.

I have taken the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia twice to look at the Great Smokies and take photos. Clingmans Dome and Cades Cove are the obvious answers. Clingmans was clouded in both times, Cades Cove was a disappointment if you are looking for the grandeur of a mountain view. Views of the Smokies may be seen from the Lake Fontana area to the southeast. There are few roads exploring the park, only one goes through it. I drove all the way around it but there were few good views of the Great Smokies. For mountain views, travel back up the Blue Ridge Parkway. I found the most spectacular mountain views from numerous overlooks there before reaching the park, they were amazing compared to the park itself. The park is good for wilderness shots mostly.
