We did a very similar route in 2015, and did a lot of these recommended items. One other place we visited that was well worth our time was the Little Bighorn battlefield National Monument on the Crow reservation in Montana. It’s between Beartooth pass and Devil’s Tower and only took a few hours. Very moving.
I've been there twice, in 2009 and 2017. Fort Laramie, WY is another interesting place -- it is on US-26 and would be on the early part of the journey going to Jackson, WY.

Cody, Wyoming: Buffalo Bill Museum and Old Trail Village. Both definitely worth a stop.

I live in NE Ar, the route we take is thru Kansas City into Iowa, a must stop is Sergeant Floyd’s Monument in Sioux City IA. Crossing over into SD we stop at Spirit Mound in Vermillion, going on to Mitchell thru back roads. Mitchell has the Corn Palace and a great Cabelas. From Mitchell be sure and stop at the rest stop at Chamberlain just before you cross the Missouri. They have a giant statue of Sackejawea. From there stop at Wall Drug, Badlands, Custer State Park ( take Wildlife loop), Wounded Knee Battlefield, Sturgis. We usually head to Wyoming from here after crossing into Wyoming there is a Buffalo dig site right after crossing the state line. From there to Buffalo, if not interested in the LBH Battlefield you can cross over the Big Horn Mountains going toward Cody which is 50 miles from Yellowstone. There is so much to see if interested in this route pm for more good stops.
