Canon Printers

Some odd things going on at the canon USA website. It looks like they may be phasing out the Pixma Pro-10 and Pro-100. Price has come down plus they have zero in stock. They have announced a new printer at the price point of the old price for the Pro-100 - the Pro 300.

Differences I see are pigment-based ink, panoramic printing up to 39 inches by 13 inches, 2 black cartridges with new matte black so no switching of cartridges, smaller footprint, can detect clogged nozzle and reposition others to cover that space, others?

Thoughts or impressions? Due out in 2 days.

First of all it's more expensive at nearly $900 than either of the two you mentioned. New ink, but no bigger cartridge, so it's still expensive to run. Also, the software may be more useful than any of the new physical features. My take is the Pro 1000 at $1200 (often on sale for $1000) is a much better deal - larger ink tanks, can handle 17 inch wide paper and unless physical space is unavailable, more features. My guess is within the next year the new 300 will be selling for $500 or less.

The Pro 100 used to list at $899 so it fits in that slot. And yes Canon has reduced the price over time. Different ink and I wish it were tanks. Im still waiting for a photo printer with tanks not cartridges. The panorama function would be nice as I do shot them. The software may work on the old pro printers as well so will just have to see.

"Im still waiting for a photo printer with tanks not cartridges."

Epson makes one. The Epson L1800 is a photo printer with 6 tanks. You have to go to maybe India to buy it.

Attached file is the brochure.

My lack of success with Epson printers means I will probably never buy one again after having to throw out one just about every year as the heads dried up and clogged. Admittedly, I have used one in years but my Canon MFP has NEVER dried up using 3rd party inks and usually doing about 5 pages a month. Besides Ive been to India and would rather not go again at my age (heat , bugs, ..)

With google I found several hits in European countries. ebay has two sources for the L1800. My questions is why it is not a USA product?

Many models are "out of stock" or "on backorder".
Made in China?

Somewhat unrelated, but in 2012 I bought a new Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 II on Amazon for $395. I was looking to replace a balky large-format HP printer and just happened upon the Canon at a great price. It has functioned flawlessly all these years with light use despite being moved across country in the back of an SUV a couple of times. I have never used anything but Canon print cartridges.

I have a Canon pro 100. All I could say is that it makes such good prints that it is by far the best Canon printer value by a mile
Try their Platinum Pro and you will see why?

I have the Epson ET-2670, with ink tanks. Very nice. It does double-sided printing very easily. Buying all new ink bottles costs just $63.00. It also scans and makes copies. And another nice feature is having it tell me how many copies it has made.

No, the the 8-ink, dye-based, 13" wide Canon Pro-100 has never listed at $899. At least not in $ US!

Introduced in 2013, it's original list price was $499. It almost never sold for that, though. For many years the Pro-100 was offered with a $250 mail in rebate, making it's final cost $149. And that included a full box of 13x19 Semi-Gloss "Photo Plus" paper (50 sheets) that's currently selling separately for $48 (list price $98).

In fact, Canon has substantially increased the net price of the Pro-100 by significantly reducing the mail-in rebate and no longer throwing in the paper for free. At B&H Photo the printer w/paper now lists for $548 and there's a $150 mail in rebate for net cost of $398. It's also now sometimes being sold without any paper, list price $499 (same as originally), $349 net price after $150 mail in rebate.

Either way, the days of a "real bargain" Pro-100 appear to be over! It's still reasonably priced.... just not the ridiculously good deal it used to be!

However, Canon USA's online store is offering the Pro-100 (no paper) for $499.99, with $150.00 mail-in rebate, net cost $299.99. (Think they need a better calculator? Or maybe that's the "new math" )

The 10-ink, pigment-based, 13" wide Canon Pro-10 was introduced in 2015 at a list price of $699 (US). It has been offered recently with a $200 mail-in rebate, for a net cost of $499.

The new Canon Pro-300 was just announced. It will be a 13" wide, 10-ink, pigment-based printer. Ignoring the model name and based upon it's specs alone, it's essentially a replacement for the Pro-10, not the Pro-100. The list price for the Pro-300 is $899.99. It's expected in stores by the end of July, but that might be optimistic (see below).

The Canon Pro-100 and Pro-10 are out of stock many places. This likely is due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Apparently non-essential manufacturing is slowed or halted many places and international shipping is a real mess right now. Things are getting held up at ports and in customs for weeks on end. One of the news channels recently had a story about slow delivery.... mailed themselves a package from Canada to the U.S..... and are still waiting for it five weeks later! It remains to be seen if the new printer will be delayed or not.

According to Canon Price Watch, the Pro-100 has only been out of stock for a few days. On the other hand, the Pro-10 has been out of stock for many weeks, which may be a deliberate sell down of stock anticipating the new replacement model.

Same experience with the same printer.

Actually, if you check around, you'll find that the Pro-10 has been officially discontinued, ie., out of production. So places being out of stock is not due to the Corona virus. They're just gone.

The new Pro-300 is its replacement. While not official, it is likely that the Pro-100 is being discontinued. Amfoto, I got my Pro-10 just a few weeks ago from Murphy's Camera in Kentucky for $199 net. They say they sold over 1,000 at that price.
