What about the kids' parents and grandparents...that the kids carry all their germs and viruses home to? What about the teachers...many of whom are older? It's not just about the kids.

School is a petri dish.

It's a tough issue. Kids need to be in school. On-line classes are marginal at best.

No school also adds to the burden of parents lucky enough to still be working.

I think this has to be a locally driven decision. Our local school system, HISD, has already declared zero live classes at the start of the school year. It is the right decision...we are an epicenter right now and the hospital systems are reaching the point of being overwhelmed.

Other areas of the state are probably fine opening their schools. The best idea is offer both live and on-line learning. The Texas guidelines are saying offer both...with minimum sign up durations of like 2 or 3 months. Once you choose on-line, you are stuck with it till the next grading cycle.

Trump and Devos demanding that all schools open is the height of denial and folly.

Maybe Trump should demand that people mask up with equal vigor as he calls for schools to open...

The kids parents are currently in close proximity to their kids. And BTW there is no evidence that young kids transfer the viris to others. And if teachers are worried about transfer they do not have to go. Yes it's a local decision. My grand kids in R.I. are both going back to school. One a senior in High school yhe other a junior in college

Not true.

And yes parents are already exposed to their own kids.

When their kids come home from school, those parents then become exposed to all the families of all the kids their own kids were exposed to that day...and the next day...and the next day...it is a multiplier.

Assuming thats true, the probability of any one under 65, with ho underlying conditons dying of covid is less than 0.5%. You are far more likely to die in your car, than from Covid 19. The single most dangerous thing a person can do is drive. Uwards of 20 million people die each year in auto accidents. In the 6 months of the virus 145,000 have died while 10 million have died on the road. I don't intend to deminish the serious of the virus, but the death rate from it is a very low percentage of those who test positive.

Yet the USA ranks 8th in mortality per capita of the population...

With our advanced healthcare system (said somewhat satirically) we should be much better than that.

And I have to ask, did you get the 0.5% stat from the same source as the fact that kids don't transmit the virus?

Run the numbers for yourself. About 140,000 dead from Covid in the US. 45 million tested. And 90% of the dead were over 70. And for people under 20 close to 0 have died. And there is no evidence, to date, that children transmit the disease. There is only one reason that some states will not open schools---politics.
