I've had this problem with the new ACR a few times, but not usually. I've attached two images taken with my iPhone (not my camera of choice), showing the same image in ACR, with only one variation: in one, the Highlights slider is at minimum, and in the other, that slider is at maximum.
Looking at the upper left piece of the leaf, it looks to me that the maximum Highlights is dimmer, and that the minimum Highlights is brighter, the opposite of what I've come to expect - and usually get - from ACR.
Any ideas what is going on? Has ACR gone wacky, or is it yet again me? And if it's ACR, any ideas how to correct it? (If it's me, I've got my own solutions.)
Post the original file so someone else can test it in their copy of ACR.

okeedokee. Here's the original raw file. Well, no, it's not here. I chose a file and it showed up under "Choose File, I clicked store original, and I clicked add attachment, but nothing was added. Is it not possible to add a .NEF file?

You can attach any file type, but it must be less than 20 mb. Once it attaches (wait for it to upload before clicking the update button!), it will show as a download link only, no photo.

Thanks Linda From Maine or Washington or wherever
How do I post the original file if it's 90.56 mb? I don't think a .tif will meet the 20 mb limit. I imagine there might be a workaround, but I have no idea what it might be.

Have you ever used dropbox? You can create a free account, upload the file there, then generate a link for others to access and download to their computer.

ThanksLinda. I use Box. The file is there, called _DSC5933copy.nef. The access code is
https://app.box.com/s/rw94c5gqjh81e6furmp0ide5eqcmle2xI haven't used it in years, but it did work just fine when I did.
Loading the image from your link into ACR all reacts normal to me using the highlight slider.
With the colour picker placed within and towards the top of the left leaf;
Highlights slider to max % : 123, 86, 51
Highlights slider to min % : 118, 82, 49
The obvious visual change being a far greater increase/decrease of the background because it is brighter.
Works OK on mine. The highlight slider changes the brighter background. The shadows slider changes the leaf. It does not appear that there aren't a lot of "highlights" in the leaf itself.
Is the preview box unchecked?
Try adjusting the shadows along with the highlights for a balance. Set the contrast to zero. You can adjust the mid-tones with the curve.
Hold down the Alt key while adjusting shadows and highlights. This action presents a screen with these two adjustments isolated.

Edit to this reply................................
Looking closer now at your posted examples I misinterpreted you explanation and now notice your 'Whites" slider is at 90% and 'Blacks' -45% in each and had been adjusted as well, that is the reason you are seeing what you describe. Also Texture and Clarity adjustments !!
