What is a good remote for a Nikon D500?
Nikon ML-L3 wireless remote. Simple, cheap, and it works.

I use the NIKON ML-L3 wireless, under $20, for triggering from in front.
I use the NIKON MC-DC2 wired, under $30, for triggering it from behind.
They both work fine, and they have a radio remote which I have no experience with.
Their are also aftermarket remotes, but the price difference is small and NIKON stuff is pretty durable.
My $0.02, your mileage may vary.
The UHH members who posted here are wrong. The Nikon ML-L3 is an infrared signal remote. I have one that I use with my D7500. It works great with the Nikon cameras that utilize infrared signal triggering. The D500 works only with radio signal remotes. You would need to get the WR-T10 and WR-R10. If you get the WR-T10/WR-R10/WR-A10 bundle you can also trigger the D5000 Speedlight. I have a D500 and SB-5000. I'm going to be purchasing the WR-T10/WR-R10/WR-A10 bundle soon.

Did some research when my best friend got the D500 - though the ML L3 works very well with my D750 and D7200 it will not work with the D500.

I did state that the ML-L3 is a wireless remote.
And I confirmed that it apparently doesn’t work with the D500, unfortunately. I use it with my P900, though. Works fine.

If you decide to look for an intervalometer, which offers functions beyond just remote shutter release, be aware that the D500, as well as the D850, have some differences in the communication and functionality through the 10 pin connector. I have a Nikon MC-36 intervalometer that works great with my D810, D300s, and D300. It also works fine as a remote shutter release for the D500 and D850, but not all of the more advanced functions work properly with those two cameras. There is a more recent model, the MC-36a, that is required for them to have full functionality. I strongly suspect that there could be similar compatibility issues with at least some third party controllers.
Try vello remotes on Adorama and B&H

I bought the WR-T10/WR-R10/WR-A10 bundle shortly after getting my D500, which was shortly after it was released. A bit pricey if you only want a trigger, because it is much more than that. Combined with SB-5000 Speedlight(s) you can do a lot.

Wireless I purchased the SMDV RFN-4s kit off of Amazon and have had good luck with it
Whats cool too is Nikon/Apple App that using I Phone allows you to fire camera remotely using your eye phone . Used this recently to shoot an interior view with camera mounted on the ceiling . I used it with Nikon D5300 . Not sure what other cameras there are apps for .

SnapBridge. It works with the D500 and it’s free.

I wonder why the others don't work with that body?
Again, I apologize for giving out bad advice.
