JUst to place the Covid 19 fatalites in perspective--in 1919 the spanish flue killed 650,000 americans. With a population of 100 million, the % of the population who died of that pandemic makes the fatalities of the carona virus look like a minor cold. With a population of 350 million and about 150,000 fartalities the current virus is minor annoyance. Therefore the entire shutdown of thye US is a big mistake

I suggest that you and others who consider it a minor annoyance go out and get infected and report back as to how much you were annoyed.

Consider the history of the 1918 pandemic and its start and peaks. Also, consider our ability to treat those infected now vs then which reduces the fatalities. Remember that the COVID 19 is not a simple have it get over it illness, lung, and other organ damage is a lifetime residual.

Indeed there are benefits to allowing widespread infection: Reduction of Social Security costs many old will die. Better unemployment numbers, once dead they are off the list. Getting rid of as Trump would say "Shit Hole People" those with darker skin who tend to vote democratic. Instilling fear in voters so they will not stand in line for hours thus increasing Trump's chances of winning.

The infection of spanish flu stopped "suddenly" why? Herd immunity. Yes Covid 19 is a serios problem. But the total shutdown of the american economy for 6 months is unnessary. And some of it is purely political And if properly managed the fatalities bwould have been much less. Keepi8ng the Schools closed is anothyer pure political play. As the risk to kids is essemtially 0. Futhermore about 100,000 people have died in some years, medical treatmentvven with modern medicine of seasonal flu. There was no shutdown un those years. More people die of cancer every year. Why don't we shut down the economy? And don't give me thye its not contageous, it is also inherited. It's the shutting down of the economy, maybe because Trump is president and the economy was humming, thyat the shutdown has lasted for 6 months. pardon the many mistakes. my left hand aint working well enough, so I must type with only my right hand

The big difference is the asymptomatic aspects of the virus . Previous only the already sick ( with exception of “Typhoid Mary”- try reading) were capable of spreading the virus .
Thus one is entirely different.

Comparison with any past virus is ignorant.

The virus will not have run its course until 50% to 70% of the population has been infected. We are a long way from that. Further, there will no respite of the first wave leading to a second wave. The infections will simply continue unabated until, and unless, people learn, and are forced, to seriously social distance and wear masks.
The economy was opened way too early, and cannot remain open now if this virus is to be ever under control.

With so many dingbats listening to trumps insanity this virus will last twice as long.

6 months ago they should have put a dirty sock in trumps mouth and then sewed it shut.

Trump has made historically bad decisions since this began. His slow reaction all through January and February was not leadership. Since then, he has downplayed the severity of it; telling the country on January 22, it was under control, somehow the virus go away by a miracle, by Easter, and bragging about how well It was being handled. Even this week, he says 99% of the cases are “totally harmless“. This dismissive attitude was a grave disservice to every citizen of this country. He lied to his country about the severity of a national health crisis.
He amplified his irresponsibility by encouraging businesses to reopen and people to mingle; prematurely, against all the scientific advice available, all the while refusing to wear a mask himself. The result of Trump’s failures is a surging infection rate today, that has no foreseeable end. The economy will not recover until the virus is contained, and because of Trump’s impatience to get the economy “roaring back“; that is not going to happen.
Trump will be remembered as a failure with bloody hands.

You are either forgetting or ignoring the fact that the management of this virus is a state responsibility. The Governors decide when to open the businesses in their state. The governors decide how treatment is regulated . In New York state for instance, the governor sent ill people to nursing homes, killing thousands. The governors decide social distancing. The governors decide when he schools open. Again in New York Trump made a 1,000 bed naval hospital ship available. Made 1,000beds available in the Javits Center. Guess who did not use the naval hospitaln ship or the Jevits center? Governor Cuomo. The only way a president, even Biden, who claimed he could have done it better, is to declare some kind of National emergency. If rrump would have done that ,younwould have called him a dictator, a Nazi or worse. n GOVERNOR Newsom of Ca. has said that he would not open Ca untill a vacine that works is available. Problem is that there may never be a vaccine. Again, the governors will have blood on their hands not the president

I don’t think you read, or certainly misunderstood the gist of my post.
I made two points: 1).Trump’s dismissive attitude about the virus from the start leading many Americans to believe it was no big deal. 2). Trump’s attitude that the cure (broken economy) was worst than the disease—thereby using his position to encourage people, businesses to return to normal without regard to social distancing or the wearing of masks.
It was the President’s deceitful approach telling everybody the virus would go away, wishing, thereby sending a totally false narrative to everyone. Encouraging the economy prematurely. It was the Presidents job to unite the country in the midst of a National Crisis. Instead he continues to divide. We need a leader with compassion, not one spewing falsehoods, and false hope. The “leader” wouldn’t even wear a mask to set the example
That was my point in that post. Get it NOW!
Good God, don’t be thick. (Sorry, but read the words objectively, not what you think I mean.)

The President is the leader of the country. While governors and mayors have jurisdiction in many of the issues in this tragedy—it is the President who sets the tone. This President spent the last six months wishing the virus would “go away“. He should have honesty told us the truth, not downplayed the virus. He should have offered a unified national policy, not told us that we are “in good shape” and “ under control”.
He should have listened to the medical authorities and scientists, not followed his gut.
This American tragedy falls on Trump for his lies, dismissive approach, and failure to lead through the entire calamity. He has waved the white flag at this point, seemingly unaffected by the suffering and death—now, and in the next year or more.
The man has failed his people.

Sadly, it has just begun. 50% to 70% of Americans will be infected at the current rate of infections if something is not done to curtail it.
Miami-Dade county averages 2000 new infections everyday. How long will that continue before a lockdown is needed?

I think 120 today in Florida. 4000 or so total. About 1000 in total Miami to date, That is what I remember without looking at the figures.
Enough that if something doesn't slow it down, the number will rise exponentially very fast.
