You must be not to far away from water for these critters to visit. Raccoons are a protected species so don’t try to trap them and release them elsewhere. If you do, I hope you have a lot of money to pay the fine.

Stay as far away from raccoons

If you see them in the day , there are two reasons why. Raccoons are nocturnal and will forage at night. If you see them in the day time they may be extremely hungry and can’t find food at night. Or, they might be rabid. In either case, stay away.

Raccoons like to be near water. I was told by a veterinarian friend that raccoons “wash” their food. They do not have salivary glands and must moisten the food from the garbage can by dipping it in a puddle of water.

While they look adorable they are rodents and can be quite destructive. Our dog is very eager to catch one. Don’t let dogs or cat get bitten by raccoons. Besides rabies your pets can receive a nasty, extremely infected bite.

You can scare them away by taking two aluminum pie pans filled with pennies and fling it around.

Do not try to shoot trap or hunt raccoons. Remember I said they are protected.

Just take pictures of these critters!

They may be "protected" in New York, but here in Texas, they are a menace. I often have to chase them away from eating the cat's food, sometimes 3 or 4 at a time, also with their young. And yes, they do carry rabies, so keep your distance.

My friend has 10 cats...Some eat inside and some prefer to dine outside.
At a recent Halloween party a nearby raccoon decided to join the party.
He even wore a mask!
