I am new to this digital game. Looking at software editing programs not only for their functionality, but also price. Let's say PhotoShop did not exist, which program would you then go with?
I am looking at: Capture One Pro 6 by Phase One (right now I can get this for 50% off only thru end of month, I think this is the closest to Photoshop), Niks Capture NX2, Lightroom 4.

Being brand new to the game, you probably should start with a freeware clone of Photoshop. Something like Gimp or Picasa. You can get them at downloads.com. Both act a lot like Photoshop and have a decent set of filters and some real fun special effects. Whatcha got to lose? I guarantee you'll have so much fun and it will kill the potential for fear of these type programs. Start each time by making a duplicate of the file or a separate layer. That way you can't damage the image that you started with.

I use CaptureNX2 - only handles Nikon Raw -but other than that it does a great job of editing. I've had PaintShop since Jasc put it on the marker; got PhotoShop because the instruction said I needed it for her course - BIG mistake! The only time I don't use NX is when I want some bell or whistle it doesn't do, then I use PaintShop

Corel PaintShop Pro X4 or Lightroom4. The only thing with lightroom is you can't work with layers.

but Photoshop does exist...I think you have to determine what you want to do with your editing software...then you look at what's available that has those features...most of the ones you pay for you can try out for free.....Photoshop Elements does a fine job and it's not that expensive...

Yeah, I just uprgaded to Elements 10.. Lovin' it. Just this mornin' I was working with changing the focal point after the fact. That blows my mind. I suggested since the poster is new to it all, he could get a really good look at what they can do for free with Gimp and / or Picasa. Have you checked them out? Lots of fun and some filters that go beyond the norm. Best to you

I use Picasa all the time....I like that it allows you to view many types of file extensions including RAW files.
