Just purchased a used Nikon D500 with a 12,000 shutter count and 2 year warranty. New seems to be scarce at this time. Local camera shop had this one.
Any opinions on the 16-80 f2.8-80 lens?
Also, suggestions on what xdq card and reader. Bought this mostly for wild life. Thanks.

I have two D500's. I had purchased the Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4. I was disappointed. It's a $500 to $600 lens that sells for $1000. I already had the previous 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. They seemed to have lowered the quality of the 16-80mm. It has noisy autofocus. Mine had a severe back focusing issue. You can tell that the build quality has been lowered. I ended up returning it. I found a camera store that still had one new 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Now I have two of the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses. I'm very happy with them.

I had the 16-85 on my D7200. Sold all crop frame equipment. Need to pick up another 16-85.

As for the XQD card and reader, any card will be faster than the D500 requires. I have Sony 64gb cards in both my D500 and Z7. One was because it was the least expensive, the other because B&H included it with the Z7. As for the reader I got this one because I can use it with my iPad Pro and my computers. It works great.

Two brands of XQD cards: Sony which you can find, usually, at a Best Buy. And Delkin Devices.

For Readers, Sony has a great one for XQD and SD for $50, Delkin has a XQD only reader for $30. Both are USB 2.0

Nikon also makes XQD cards now.

I use Sony xqd cards in my d500. 64gb. I just put a 2tb nvme m2 drive in my desktop. Transferring pics from the camera to the m2ssd drive us way way faster than my 3.1 USB card reader. I can transfer 540 pics off my camera to my desktop in less than 2 minutes. With a hdd hard-drive I could almost eat dinner before they transferred. A little exaggeration about dinner but I'm truly amazed at how much faster the ssd m2 drive is.

I read about the Nikon XQD cards in a photography magazine. It seems that they're only available at camera stores in Japan right now. They should bring them over here to the US.

You can buy them off eBay or Nikon.

B&H and Adorama both have them.

I don’t want to start a war, but... if you ever think that you might go full frame, I suggest only getting full frame (better quality, like gold band), Nikon lenses. They will be fully interchangeable between the D500 and a Nikon full frame body, and, at full frame on the full frame body.
That’s what I have always done done and now with D850 and D810, I am glad that I did, I didn’t need to get any new lenses!!! And the advantage of using the same lenses on different bodies, is your muscle memory. You are already familiar with them, not two different sets for different cameras.
BTW: if you plan on staying at DX size, please ignore all of the above!!!
Best of luck and take many great images!!

I beg to differ. It is a great idea to be able to have a set of full frame lenses to be used on both FX and DX bodies. Even though the FX lenses are more expensive to start with there are savings at the end of the day. However, effectively you do end up with two differing sets of lenses. You have to remember that when a FX lens is placed on a DX body the effective focal length increases by 50%. For example a 100mm FX lens will present as 100mm on the FX body but 150mm on the DX body. So you have to train your muscle memory to take that fact into account when selecting the right focal length lens to put on the DX body.

By the way, I am using 120GB 400 MB/Sec write speed Sony XQD cards. They are very expensive compared to the SD cards but needed no doubt to keep up with the continuous 10 frames per second shutter speed.

The 16-80 2.8-4 is on my D500 when I am around family, gives the same coverage area as my 24-120 F4 FX lens on my D850. That's why I like it so much, that 24-120 range cover's almost everything I need.
And, it is a LOT lighter than my 24-120.
That lens hood is especially designed to disengage it you drop your lens, saving the lens and the hood, GO NIKON.

I use the venerable 17-55mn f/2.8 zoom as the primary lens on my D500 and am well pleased with it. When I got a second D500, I looked at the 16-80, but found it quite disappointing and very overpriced. One thing to be aware of is that it is actually f/4 over almost all of its zoom range. That is one of the main reasons I think it is overpriced. And it seems to be based on the old 18-70mm zoom. I owned that lens in my early digital photography days and found it to be incredibly mediocre. Of course, it cost less than $400.

After looking around, I decided on a recent model of the 24-120mm f/4. I found a very nice used one for $425 at my local camera store. If you think in terms of full frame equivalent, it is about 35-180mm, which I find to be very useful. You would have to decide if not having the extra range at the bottom would be a problem. I have found it usually not to be, and I've got the other lens for those few cases when it might be. Some consider this lens not to be the greatest FX lens, but I have had no complaints on a DX camera. I do bump saturation up one notch in picture control, because it sometimes doesn't seem to be as "colorful" as other lenses.

I know that there are others who love the 16-80. I did not.

I have the D500 but found I did not need the benefits of the very expensive XQD card, so never bought one. I just use the SD slot because I rarely use any type of shutter burst.
