Hello all,

I'm thinking of buying the Nikon D7100. Can anyone here give me any tips on what I should look out for? I already have a D7000 and I am pretty happy with it, thus the D7100 would be a gift.
What are your thoughts?

I have a D7000 and added a D7200 for an upgrade. It’s a bigger step up than to a D7100. I think you can still get a D7200 body from B&H for around $700. With the D7200 I can set Auto ISO with the dial instead of having to go into the menu to do that, plus there’s a couple other handy improvements.

I have a 7100 and use it almost every day for work. I am a Deputy Coroner and have to photograph death scenes for documentation and to include when a body goes to the Medical Examiner. I also use it for other professional photo work. I have an attached battery pack the makes handling easier. Having double card slots is good when I have to do multiple cases before I can down load to a computer.

Just get the 7200. You'll be glad you did. No brainer according to all the recommendations over the last few years on this site.

I have had my 7100 for a few years, and it has been trouble free. As much as I like mine if I were you I think I would get a 7200. I have thought about it, but the 7100 is more than I will ever need.

It would have to be old stock because they haven't made that model in years. It's been replaced by the 7200 and 7500.

You already have the 7000 happy with it why upgrade? Do you have gas? If you want to upgrade one step is not much the 7200 would be better I think I love mine. What you need to do, what I did, is make a list of your wants and needs. How many frames per second, hig iso, one or two card slots etc etc. I would make this list in a prioritized position most wanted at the top. Then I would look for a camera that met my list. Just my two cents for what it's worth.

Happy hunting, happy deciding, happy shooting. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply.

I believe I am moving toward the D7200. That is, as long as it has two card slots. I found this to be very handy! Full-frame would be a definite plus.

The D7200 is not full frame. I love mine. I have a D850 for full frame.

D7200 is excellent - got one used instead of the D7500, because most of the new features of the D7500 were unimportant to me. I have full frame Nikons which I use for a broad variety of things, but use the 7200 most for birds and other wildlife. Plenty of samples identified and posted here. If you go FX the D810 is excellent as well.

You are happy with your D7000. You are a lucky person. Why the need for a second camera? If you want a gift, given the situation that currently is in place donate that "gift" money to some of the organizations that are helping with real-life problems. They will be happy, you'd feel happier.

I have both the D7100 and the D7200. I love them both... but, the D7200 has a larger buffer... so, if you are into birding or wildlife shooting that requires higher FPS counts, you will likely not be happy with the D7100. Both deliver great photos however.
