I've done a search on this subject and it appears it has not been discussed on this forum since 2015. I've downloaded and tried several different brands of backup software and have not found one that I feel covers everything I want. I'm not asking for too much, am I? User friendly, scheduling, selective folder or files backup, being able to see a thumbnail of the image backed up on my external drive? In fact, very few provide the thumbnail image of a photo. Most programs do compression into one huge backup file and if a separate backup image file is shown, only the file name or an icon of the photo file is shown. I'm even willing to pay for the software. Anyone have any recommendations for me? Thank you.

I use Syncback by 2brightsparks... They have a free version and two pay version - compare HERE.
Easy to set up and use with the ability to select by folder or file type. The destination structure is the same as the source making it easy to review/audit.

Your UHH search failed because the UHH search feature sucks big time. It apparently only searches on the titles. The subject has been discussed quite a lot here.

You mentioned being able to see thumbnails. That sort of implies that you are focusing on your photopile. When talking about backup you should be considering everything on your computer. Photos, word processing, spreadsheets, email, program configuration files, data, etc... The only thing you probably don't need to back up is your programs. They are easily replaceable by downloading from the original source. However, any configuration files should be backed up so you don't have to try to remember how you had the program set up. Probably instead of "thumbnails" you should be referring to "icons".

It would help answer your questions if you would let us know what computer you have and the OS. PC? Mac? Linux?
Also, what is your budget? "even willing to pay" implies you want something not too expensive. The real question here is how much do you value your files?

Backup is insurance. You try to pay someone to shoulder some of the risk.

First of all, there's backup and there's archive. Backup is for files that are probably going to be used in the near future ("near" is subjective and may be a couple years) while archive is for files that you don't expect to need soon, but don't want them to disappear completely. Backup is short term, archive is long term (maybe centuries?). Most people use the terms interchangeably but there is a difference.

For both backup and archive there are different levels of safety. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-650414-1.html#11294805

Thanks for responding. I am using a PC-Windows 10. My budget is probably under $100 one time purchase.
I realize there are many important files on my hard drive other than my photo files, but most, if not all, of the backup software I have reviewed cover the backup of non photo files with no problem. So that is why my question relates only to my image files. I am looking for software to backup my image files to an external drive. I've got the cloud backup covered with iDrive.

iDrive to the external drive does not provide a thumbnail image of my image files. It doesn't even provide an image format. It is some kind of compressed format. Acronis True Image is probably my favorite from a standpoint of being user friendly, and it appears to be comprehensive, but it does not provide a thumbnail of my images, just an icon that it is an image. EaseUS is also Ok, but it does not provide thumbnails. AOMEI provides thumbnails, but IMO it has a severe syncing weakness related to deleted files.

So maybe I am being too particular about being able to see thumbnails instead of icons, but that is my preference.

Sorry, but I found Syncback to be confusing and not user-friendly. Maybe I am spoiled with some software and expecting too much. Thank for you feedback though.

I started with SyncToy, free from Microsoft. Liked the concept an upped the control-ability with a paid version of GoodSync. It works very well at what I want it to do and it has enough options to do everything I might want it to do some day.

I highlight the files I want to back up, and drag them to where I want them backed up. Works with Mac or Windows, no other software needed. The main drawback - you need to be able to think for yourself.

I use SyncBack and once setup it works in the background without any further operator intervention. I love it. I found it easy to use, but I was a senior staff engineer in a high tech electronics company before I retired. If you decide to try it, I'm sure we can help you set it up for unattended background operation.

I'll take another look at it.

If you Google “ugly hedgehog backup” or “ugly hedgehog backup software” or “ugly hedgehog backup SW”, you’ll find plenty of reading.

Personally, I prefer a mirror or image, not a compressed file. I currently use Goodsync, but have also used Acronis.

Thank you. I will do a bit more searching.
