I have a Quick Release Plate Arca Swiss Compatible plate. See photo. What is the purpose of the two set screws. Yes, I lost one. I can replace it but why are they even there?

They provide a slide stop when mounted to a compatible interfacing mount on your tripod.
They keep your camera from sliding out of the matching mount when you loosen the slide friction nut and the camera mounted interface can slide forward and aft within the capturing mount but not lift out of the slide it self.
Replace the missing machine screws . . its part of the design.

On the Arca-Swiss quick release I have on my tripod, there are two pins which will use those screw as a safety measure to keep the plate from sliding completely out of the quick-release mechanism. This is a safety feature that keeps the plate from sliding out in an unintended manner. I agree with the replacing the screw.
