Sorry if this is a stupid question but is viewing through an electronic view finder on a mirrorless camera the same as viewing on the back screen of a digital SLR camera.

Yes, the same live view of the data from the sensor. The EVF is always there, both on the LCD on the back of the mirrorless body and in the view finder, with no mirror lock-up process. The mirrorless also can zoom 10x in the view finder, with a button on the body or an integrated mirrorless lens, something the DSLR can do, but not with the lens integration and not in the view finder.

Also the EVF may have a live histogram which basically means, for me at least, exposure problems are a thing of the past.

They are the same but the one in the viewfinder is smaller but with the eyepiece it looks bigger and generally has higher resolution than the back screen. Also it's shielded from ambient light so you won't have problem using it in bright light.

The electronic view finder of my Nikon Z6 and Z7 is 2-3 times more resolution than my rear LCD. It is also brighter and "optically" better due to the glass in front of the EVF. No glare during broad day light viewing.
