Here are two photos of the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, NY a little before sunset, and just as the sun was settling behind the ridge. Here is a little history of the area.

The Shawangunk Ridge, also known as the Shawangunk Mountains or simply "The Gunk’s", is a ridge of bedrock in Ulster County, Sullivan County and Orange County in the state of New York, extending from the northernmost point of New Jersey to the Catskill Mountains. Shawangunk Ridge is the continuation of the long, easternmost ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. The ridge is known as Kittatinny Mountain in New Jersey and as Blue Mountain as it continues through Pennsylvania. The ridge constitutes the western border of the Great Appalachian Valley.

The photos were taken just west of the village of New Paltz, in Ulster County, NY from a pull-off on Mountain Rest Road. This road leads up to the Mohonk Mountain House, which has been in operation since 1869. Skytop Tower can be seen on top of the ridge in the center of the second photo. The current Skytop Tower is the fourth tower that has been on the property and was built in 1923. The first, built in 1870 was destroyed in a storm, and the other two both burned down.

Beautiful photos Vince! I'm very familiar with that area as my brother in law lives just off 299 west of New Paltz. I used to fly into the little airstrip off Butterville rd, a few miles from his house and he'd pick me and his sister up. I haven't been there since I retired and moved to Tampa 17 years ago.

These are both nice, and the barn scenic is my winner.

Thank you very much Gary. Glad you liked them. I was just over that way again a couple of days ago, coming back from near Kerhonkson. Lots of deer on 299 at night... need to be careful going through there.

Thank you very much John. The barn image is a favorite of mine as well. I was thinking of cropping in on it and making it a tighter shot too.

Nice shots Vince - I do remember the Mohonk Mountain house from the time I lived in a previous life in Westchester!
