Carbonite vs Backblaze?

I'm currently using 3 external HDs and Backblaze to protect my files. If disaster were to strike and all my EHD's be lost or destroyed, to recover my files, Backblaze would load them all up on a brand new 8TB EHD for which they would charge me the cost of the Hard Drive, and send it to me. They do not provide download of individual files. Is Carbonite any better than that? Can one download individual files/folders from Carbonite with ease? Thank you.

I did not have a good experience with Carbonite.
Lost data that was supposed to be backed up.

I use Backblaze and AFAIK you can download your files, in groups or individually without problem.
The EHD is just an option for a full restore, to prevent you from having to wait days or even weeks for files to download.

I've done it on several occasions.

Jeff

I am a BackBlaze user and I have been for over 3 years.

In the beginning, I considered multiple formats and based on price and service I chose BackBlaze

The nice thing about BackBlze is, one low price for unlimited storage when it is done on one machine.. This would include the backing up of any portable hard drives, i.e. USB drives which are attached to that 1 single machine...

I currently have almost 20TB stored in the clouds and my total cost is under $5 a month.

With regards to backups yes, you can download and restore single files, groups of files or you can have them send you the data on portable hard drives.

With the portable hard drive option, you pay the price of the hard drive, they send you the data, you conduct your restore, you return the hard drive to them, and they will give you credit back onto your credit card for the purchase of the hard drive.

For me it is a good solution and works well for what I do... Other here may have different needs and that is what choice is about.

BTW,,, I also do have a network attached storage device in addition to my computer and the cloud but, that's another for another time...

Cheers

That seems to be a huge cost for a small amount of drive space. I realize that these are SSDs but it's the limited capacity that would be a concern to me.

Consider Crashplan - unlimited storage at competitive price to Backbl. One difference is Backbl will back up EHD’s but you have to plug in every month or they will delete that data. Crashplan also has slow recovery plus sending EHD (I believe) but you can select specific files to download reasonably if you are on the go. I have found Cloudwards on YouTube has pretty good reviews and comparisons.

I would also recommend Code 42/Crashplan.

I use Idrive and find it works well. You can download individual files and/or full backups.

In a word, “Yes.” It’s very easy to do with Carbonite. In fact, you can even download files from your smartphone.

Back in 2012 when I was working and on vacation in New York I received a panic phone call from a client, looking for an Excel file I had sent him (that he couldn’t locate). I didn’t have my laptop with me, but was able to access it through the Carbonite app on my iPhone and email it to him.

Just be aware that in the event you would have to restore your entire system from Carbonite onto another system drive, it would take “days.” The length of time would be dictated by the speed of your internet connection. As you do, I have external hard drives as backup also.

I look at Carbonite as a last resort to use in the event I needed to do a complete restore. I did it once years ago with no problem, but it did take me 4 days! Hence the reason for external backups as well. I use Acronis software to manage that.

I don’t know about Backblaze, but if they would load your system on an external hard drive and send them to you, that is appealing.

Fredrick...

...... "Yes, they did load my system onto a USB drive and send to me..."

... I can tell you that my entire system (before NAZ) got hit with a 'Ransomware'... It was BAD

I contacted BackBlaze, via their system, Order a complete copy of all of my files which was sent to me via 'US Mail'.... YES, I had to give them a 'fair' payment for the purchase price of two WD USB 4TB had drives but, when I return the HD, I got full credit back onto my credit card...

Yes, I had to put my O.S. and EXE file back onto my machine with a 'clean install' and then I put the 'DATA' files back onto my sentem ..

Took me about 5 days, but what a wonderful recovery...

Cheers
