I don't know if "Features" is the right word, but I can't find my thesaurus.
I use Gmail, and when I used to click on Compose, a blank email would open up, and the cursor would be next to the "To," so I would start typing the name of the recipient. Now that cursor is gone. I have to move the mouse and click the cursor into position. This seems to be a step backwards.
This next feature is nice. I don't know if it's Windows or Google doing it, but in addition to spell-check, I have grammar-check. I get a squiggly blue/green line under questionable words. If I left-click it, a single suggestion appears below. I haven't done a study of where it appears and where it doesn't. Spell-check works here, but not grammar-check.
Okay, it seems to be Gmail doing it because spell-check works here, but I have to right-click to get spelling suggestions. In Gmail, I see the suggested word below the line when I left-click on the word.
Since your question is about Gmail usage, you may want to contact Google, or use the "help" feature in Gmail.
Jerry check out Grammarly being frugal, I use the free one
Same here Jerry..doesn't seem to be a problem except for the grammar "feature." My wife suggest I get in touch with them and school them on how to talk Texan......lol.

I understand that it would make the program somewhat large and ungainly. Especially if you want the longhorns to go with it.
A thing I get with Gmail is that it posts suggested quick replies to an email, based on what the sender had said, or it suggests multi-word completions of sentences that I started. The accuracy of its suggestions are uncanny! I oscillate between being annoyed but also appreciative. This feature can be turned off.

A true Texan would understand that BS is an acceptable acronym, while LOL is not.

Yes, that is an odd feature. I never use it, though. I don't want to appear any lazier than I already do.

You have a computer. Look online.
I use Microsoft Word (or similar program) to spell and grammar check. In Word if something is misspelled it gives you alternative words. This way avoids the problem with dictionaries that you have to know how to spell a word before you can find it!

I just checked on my system: when I choose "compose" the cursor is blinking next to "To:" as it is supposed to. I have windows 10, MS Edge browser. Sometimes a simple reboot works to restore the right behavior.
